Sykes first two time winner in Modifieds in 2000
BROCKVILLE-Jeff Sykes of Edwards, N.Y. became the first two time winner in the 358 Modified Class this season at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Sykes withstood a furious challenge from points leader Lee Gill of LeFargeville, N.Y. to win the 25 lap main on Friday night.
Rookie Ron Evoy of Brockville. led the race in the early going with Sykes, Gill and Homer, N.Y’s Dale Planck working their way through traffic to take the top 3 spots. Planck’s run ended with a late flat tire and a last lap caution set up a sprint to the finish between Sykes and Gill. Gill stuck a wheel underneath Sykes car a couple of times but Sykes was able to ride the high groove into victory lane. Rookie Rich Hall of Athens was a solid third followed by Iroquois Rick Cauvier and Todd Stewart of Kingston.
Ben Tucker of Redwood, N.Y. took his 3rd feature win of the young season in the Sportsman division. Tucker simply overpowered Adam Moore of Elgin with under 5 laps to go for the victory. Moore was second at the checkered flag followed by a large charging Randy Gaudet of North Augusta.
Mark Therrien of Alexandria made it two in a row in the Pro Stock division blasting away from the field for a full straightaway win over rival Randy Earl of Brockville. Early leader Dave Marshall of Brockville was third. A caution filled Novice marathon was won by Kingston’s Terry McCullough who took over the lead in the late going when two leaders came together. Barry Baker of Portland and Pembroke’s Todd Raabe rounded out the top 3.
