Lazore wins first Modified feature ever at Cornwall
CORNWALL-John Lazore proved he could drive last year with three Pro Stock feature wins at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Sunday night, he proved he could also win in a 358 Modified taking a convincing win in the 30 lap main event.
Lazore charged through the field taking the top spot from early leader Mark Hitchcock around the midway and then survived a last lap restart for that elusive first Cornwall win. He is the first Rookie Modified winner at Cornwall since last August. Laurent Ladouceur was second at the finish as the race closed with a two car accident on the front straight that heavily damaged Jim Lazore’s car. Hitchcock settled for third followed by Eric Gauvreau and Billy Cook.
Clayton Benedict scored his second Pro Stock feature win of 2004. Benedict used the fast outside groove to his advantage throughout the 20 lap affair. He was one of the few hot shoes not involved a small get together in turn two. Stephane Labrun finished second best, with Denis Gauvreau, PJ Peters and Alan Peters coming home third through fifth respectively.
The best race of the night came in special 20 lap Semi Pro season finale for the Wild Thing Fabrication series. A torrid two car duel between Dominic Gauvreau and Denis Hamel saw the pair swap the lead back and forth 5 times in the final 5 laps. Gauvreau prevailed off of turn 4 on the final lap and also won the 3 race series title as well. Dion Oakes was third, followed across the line by Greg Ogilvie and Greg Ezard.
Stuart Mullin overhauled Nico Leblanc on a late race restart to score his fourth Rookie feature win of the year. Scott Nurse finished in the number three spot with Dan Lortie fourth and new points leader Kurtis McPhee fifth.
Cornwall Motor Speedway returns to action with a special tripleheader next Sunday night at 7pm. The night will feature the return of the wheeled warrior of the Empire Super Sprints along with the Empire Sports Network Super DIRT Series for Pro Stocks and the Modifieds. The Pro Stocks will also run a special 6 lap All Star Blast with Cornwall against the best of the DIRT Pro Stock circuit for $600 dollars first prize. The Semi Pros will also take part in this super program. .
