Big Mac takes second of the season at Cornwall

CORNWALL-Brian McDonald flexed some muscle on Sunday night and picked up a Syracuse qualifying spot as a result. McDonald survived numerous restarts after picking up the lead on lap 11 to win the special 50 lap Civic Holiday 358 Modified feature at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.

It was the second win of the season for the Cornwall driver who served notice that he was ready with a convincing victory in his heat race to complete a perfect evening. Dale Planck who had problems with his primary car in the heats, went to a back up machine, qualifying through the consi and then coming through the field to finish second from his 22nd starting spot. Laurent Ladouceur was third with Dave Heaslip and Stephane Lafrance rounding out the top five.

There was a new face in victory lane in the Pro Stock division. PJ Peters survived a scare when he almost hit a slowing teammate in the early going and went onto to an impressive win in the 20 lap main event. Clayton Benedict applied some late race pressure but had to settle for 2nd. Joey Ladouceur drove a consistent race to protect his points lead in third, followed by Marc Therrien and Roy Delormier.

Kevin McRae scored his first win of the season in the 15 lap Semi Pro main event. McRae survived a restart with 2 laps remaining to cruise to a quarter straightaway margin over Dion Oakes. Jack Johnson was third with Dale Seymour in fourth in front of a late charging Adam Turner.

Bob Ray blew past Scott Nurse and Matthieu Aubin to take the lead and went on to win his fourth feature win of the year in the Rookie division. Ray padded his points lead with the win while the others settled for second and third respectively. Kurtis McPhee and Ernie Cree made up the rest of the fast five.

Cornwall Motor Speedway returns to action next Sunday night at 7pm with the final race in the Mr Radiator series for the Pro Stock division. The 50 lap event will also be a qualifier for the Pro Stock portion of the Victoria 200 weekend in October in Fulton, New York. The Modifieds, Semi Pros and Rookies will also be on the program. The event will be the annual Race for the Children, raising money for children’s charities in the Cornwall area.
