Planck wins Modified Opener at Cornwall

Cornwall race fans found out first hand why they call Dale Planck, “The Natural” on Sunday night. Planck, a new Sunday night regular at the fast quarter mile oval, ripped through the field in the early going and then coasted to an easy win in the 30 lap Modified season opener at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

The Courtland, NY driver was consistently turning laps in the 13.3 and 13.4 range throughout the race. He grabbed the lead on lap 6 with a blistering circuit of 13.210 seconds taking over the top spot from Kyle Jacobs. Dave Heaslip finished second followed by Jacobs, John Lazore and Mark Hitchcock, who put in a impressive run after qualifying through the consi.

Marc Therrien made the race day double worth the effort. Therrien competed in a Super DIRT Series event in the afternoon at Rolling Wheels Raceway near Syracuse and then hauled the car to Cornwall in time to get in some hot laps. Despite starting at the back of the field, Therrien won the 20 lap event. The win came at the expense of Stephane Lebrun who lost a drive shaft while leading with 5 laps remaining. Mitchell Jock was second followed by Michel Dupuis and Jacques Hebert.

A great finish in the Semi Pro main event with Joe Woods and Dave Renaud swapping the lead throughout the race and then swapping paint in the sprint to the checkered. Woods came out on top, Renaud was second in front of Kevin Fetterly Jr., Chad Vallance and Kevin McRae.

Stuart Mullin captured the 12 lap Rookie main event holding off Brian Rochon, Donald Leduc, Nico LeBlanc and Dan Lortie.

Cornwall Motor Speedway returns to action with go kart racing on Tuesday night at 7pm. The next regular auto racing event goes on Sunday night at 7pm with the traditional helping of Twin 20 features for the Modifieds to celebrate the Victoria Day weekend.
