Sheppard wins Jiffy 100, Ladouceur takes Pro Stock crown at Cornwall

Matt Sheppard loves to come to Canada. His last two visits north of the border have produced victories in the Turning Stone Casino Super DIRT Series for 358 Modifieds. Sheppard captured the Jiffy 100 on Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Sheppard passed Danny O Brien on a restart on lap 83 and then led the rest of the way to back up a win earlier this month at Autodrome Eldeweiss. "We both left at the same time on that restart but I knew there was more bite at the bottom of the track," said Sheppard in victory lane. "I just squirted down underneath and went by."

O Brien who had led most of the race lost his power steering after an incident with a lapped car admitted he had nothing left for Sheppard and was simply holding on at the end. Chad Brachmann with some late moves finished third. Stephane LaFrance who sat on the pole and set a new track record in time trials of 13.391 seconds was fourth followed by Pete Bicknell. Cornwall Modified track champ Laurent Ladouceur was 30th.

The Pro Stock division points chase was a dead heat between Joey Ladouceur and Dave Bissonette heading into the 20 lap feature. Bissonnette was involved in a pair of accidents while Ladouceur ran a safe race finishing 7th to grab the crown. Stephane Lebrun using a borrowed engine won the event after a good duel with Marc Therrien and Mitchell Jock. Jock got the number two spot followed by Louis Jackson while Therrien slid off the track on the final circuit in a bid for glory.

The Duke Stocks ran two features to make up for a rain out a week ago. Dave Renaud took both ends of the twin bill. Kevin Duffy with a fourth in the opener and a third in the nightcap which carried him to the unofficial track title over former leader Gaetan Amesse who finished a lap down after an early race mishap.

The Rookies capped off the night with their 12 lap feature with Billy Woodward Jr holding off a determined Danny Larose for the top spot. Kurtis McPhee grabbed the third spot in a race that found Franklin Colpitts upside down in turn 2. Colpitts was not injured.

The Fireball Enduro will close out the 2003 racing season at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Over 200 cars took part in last year’s event. The action gets underway at 2pm next Sunday afternoon.
