YONGE WINS, WILSON THRILLS CROWD IN ESS MAIN AT CORNWALL

CORNWALL-Lance Yonge won the hardware, but it was Rick Wilson who had the fans on their feet on Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Yonge took the 25 lap Empire Super Sprint feature his second win of the season.

Bubby Kerrick brought the 23 car Sprint car field down to the green flag and led the first lap. Wilson, the former Cornwall track champ in the Modified quickly began to move from his 15th starting spot to third when the first caution came out on lap 9. Yonge then mounted his charge finally taking the lead from Kerrick on the 12th circuit. Wilson followed around in the outside groove getting to second, he was a couple of car lengths away with two laps to go when the air litterally went out of the capacity crowd as a tire went flat on the Joyceville Jet’s car. Yonge was first across the line followed by Erin Crocker, Mike Stelter, Kerrick and Ryan Coniam.

The early going of the Modified event looked like a repeat of the week before as Dave Heaslip jumped into the top spot. However, Stephane LaFrance had other ideas, the Brockville driver powered by Heaslip on lap 5 and dominated the rest of the way for his second feature win of the year. LaFrance turned laps a half a second faster than anyone else and lapped all but 8 cars in the race. Heaslip was a distant second, with Lee Ladouceur, Bill Mullin and Kyle Jacobs rounding out the fast five.

Mitchell Jock put an end to Marc Therrien’s three race winning streak in the Late Model division. Jock went wire to wire in the 20 lap event. The real scrambles were back in the pack for second through 10th. Dave Marshall with a nifty move on a late restart was second, with Roy Tarbell, Therrien and Eric Gauvreau third through fifth respectively.

The night closed out with a special extended 20 lap Rookie feature. Ron Tyo took advantage of a weak restart by Rosco Garreau to retake the top spot and proceeded to score his first feature win of 2002. Garreau recovered late in the race for second with Mike McPhee, Roch Aubin and Francis Rivest, next across the finish line.

Next Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway features the final event in the Canadian DIRT Challenge Series for the Modifieds. The series features 100 lap events at Cornwall and Edelweiss Speedways and Autodrome Granby. Vermont’s Don Scarborough won the first event last week at Granby. The Late Models, Dukes and Rookies will also be in action. The green flag drops at 7pm.
