Earl wins 6th of the year at Cornwall
It looked for awhile that Randy Earl was going to waltz to his 6th Late Model feature win of the season on Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Earl did end up in victory but the race turned quickly from a waltz into the dirt track version of the beer barrel polka.
Earl picked up the lead early in the 20 lap event blasting by Joey Ladouceur on a restart. The Brockville driver then opened up a good lead until Billy King arrived on the scene. King gave a surprised Earl a little tap on the rear quarter mile to announce his arrival with 5 laps to go. King then took it a step further actually getting under Earl going into turn 1 on the final lap. Earl himself put the hammer down getting back by coming out of turn 2 and then holding on for dear life on the final turn to take feature win number 6. King was second with Marc Therrien eating up his rear bumper at the end. Mitchell Jock and Ladouceur rounded out the top 5.
Victory lane was treated to a few donuts and a roof dance as a very happy Brian MacDonald celebrated his first Modified win at Cornwall in a couple of years. MacDonald took the lead on lap 12 getting past early leader Graham Gorman. He withstood numerous restarts to claim the win over a hard charging Joel Doiron. Chris Jones was third in front of Dave Heaslip who recovered from an early pit stop to finish 4th and Dan Jalbert.
Mike Tremblay won his second Duke Stock main of the year. Tremblay led the final 10 circuits in the 15 lap event easily outdistancing Gaeten Amesse and Tammy Jalbert. A wild and wacky Rookie stock event saw Ron Tyo bound for the win until a restart on lap 8. Tyo was involved in two separate incidents on the same lap allowing Chris Tremblay to cruise by and pick up his fifth feature of the season. Andrew Russell was second in front of Rosco Garreau and Tyo.
Next week at Cornwall Motor Speedway will be the Canadian DIRT Challenge, the second event of a two race series this week with the other event on Tuesday at Autodrome Granby. The Modifieds will compete in a 100 lap feature race with over $20,000 in prizes and awards plus a complete program of Late Models, Dukes and Rookies. The green flag drops at 7pm.
