Press Release

Pat "Flyin'" O'Brien took home the checkered flag from the Cornwall Motor Speedway on the "Race for the Children" night.

There were no cautions as the modified field ran the 30-lap feature in record time. O'Brien started in the 4th position in the feature and went high-side out of turn 2 to take over the lead from Luc Plante on lap 4. The Kingston, Ontario driver was emotional in thanking his crew and sponsors because it was his first feature win at Cornwall since the passing of long time friend and car owner, Sheldon Legue. Plante, from Sorel, Quebec, came in 2nd. Dave "the Slip" Heaslip held on for 3rd. Pat's younger brother, Danny O'Brien, who holds top spot in the points standings at Cornwall, finished 4th. Embrun, Ontario driver, Graham Gorman rounded out the top 5.

The win also gives Pat O'Brien a spot in the Victoria 200 race at Fulton Speedway later this season.

The modified feature also marked the final of four races in the Doiron Engineering Cup. The series began in May and there was one race every month at Ron Morin's quarter mile oval. Luc Plante won the $1,000 for winning the first ever Doiron Cup. For a complete look at the race results and the point standings, check out the Speedway's website at www.cornwallspeedway.com.

It was an exciting Late Model feature win for "Bulldog" Dave Bissonette from Alexandria. He went high-side coming out of turn 4 to pass another Alexandria driver, Marc Therrien for the 20-lap feature win. Eric Gauvreau returned to Cornwall after a month-long absence to finish 3rd. Randy Earl, from Brockville, and Marcel Pecore, from Cornwall, finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Jody Beckstead beat out 26 other cars to win the Duke Stock feature while Kees Van Winden took the checkered flag in the Rookie Stock main event. The winner of the "Powder Puff" was Melanie Rivet from Gatineau, PQ.

The "Race for the Children" totals won't be available until later in the week. All the drivers donated 10-percent of their prize money to the cause that raised money for various local children's charities. All drivers also canvassed the crowd for loose change during the intermission. The final figures will be available in next week's release.

On Sunday, August 22nd, the Late Model cars will vie for the title of Mr.Late Model in the final of 4 races in the series. They will run a 50-lap feature. The Modifieds, Duke and Rookies will run their regular features. Racing starts at 7 P.M.
