DANNY JOHNSON PICKS UP CAYUGA COUNTY VICTORY WITH SMALL BLOCK

WEEDSPORT, NY...Rochester, New York's Danny Johnson picked up his third DIRT Modified win of the year at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway, bringing his career total at the speedway to 47 victories. Johnson used his small block powered Troyer car to earn the victory. In sportsman action, rookie contender Matt Sheppard also earned his third win of the year at Cayuga County. Greg DeChick won the 40-lap Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro, while Randy Hall took top honors in the IMCA Modified special.

The start of the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Scott Ridley and Tom Sears Jr. battling for the top spot. Bobby Varin, aboard the number 93, a car formally driven by J.R. Heffner, was running third, passing Chuck Bower for the position when the yellow flew on lap 6 for the disabled car of Jeff Hoff.

The restart saw Sears Jr. build a respectable advantage over Varin, as Ridley faded back to fifth. Varin was on the move when the yellow again flew, this time for Bob Melone, who had looped his car in the first turn.

Sears Jr. maintained his lead over Varin, but now Danny Johnson was in third. Johnson used the outside grove around the speedway to pass the leaders and take the front spot on lap 23. Johnson had to use lapped traffic to his advantage to make the pass that would eventually lead to victory. Johnson then began to build a twenty car lead over Sears Jr. and Varin that remained until the end of the race. Bower and Scott Prentice rounded out the top five finishers.

In Sportsman action Matt Sheppard took the lead from Wade Czymmek on a first lap restart after the yellow had flow for a three car pile up in the first turn involving Joe Beyea, Tom Mettler and Rodney Plantz.

Sheppard then began to pull away from Czymmek to nearly a ten car lead. On lap 13, Czymmek lost second to Vince Vitale. At the finish it was Sheppard followed by Vitale, Czymmek, James Spano and Mike Button.

The worst accident of the sportsman race came on lap 7, when Loren Lincoln was slammed into the front stretch concrete wall. His helper was black flagged from the event.

On hand for a special appearance were the IMCA Modifieds. Randy Hall, who started on the pole, quickly jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Even though three cautions slowed the race, all for minor spins or cars stopping on the speedway, Hall was able to maintain his lead throughout the 15-lap event. Finishing second through fifth were former CCFS feature winner Don Alvord, Brent Matzel, Tom Paige and Kevin Battalle. The 40-lap enduro rounded out the night of races with Greg DeChick claiming the victory.

This Sunday will find a full three star program underway by 7 p.m., featuring the DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman and Enduros. Added to this Sunday's program will be the return of Bus Races. The Cayuga County Fair Speedway is located just east of the village of Weedsport, NY, along Route 31.
