VONDOHREN AND CHRIS SHUEY GET SECOND WINS OF SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA May 1, 2004……Cliff Quinn could see starter Ray Kemp raising the checkered flag giving him his first career win but instead multi-time champion Craig VonDohren scooted to the low groove and snatched the victory for his second win of the season in the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. And in the 20-lap main event for the NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models Chris Shuey came home the winner for the second time.
Bobby Trapper put his mount in front of the 29 car starting field in the 30-lapper for NASCAR Modifieds but Cliff Quinn was quick to put his A-B-E Car Care Center entry out front on the second lap. The two battled for the top spot for most of the first half of the race with Rick Schaffer moving into second spot on the 17th circuit of the one-third-mile clay oval. And on the 20th lap it was Craig VonDohren bringing the Devine Transport/Stauffer Construction No. 70D to the front to challenge Quinn. For the next 10 laps it was a battle that saw VonDohren make several runs for the lead only to be rebuffed by the fast Quinn. However with finish line in “shouting distance” and Quinn probably already figuring how he would spend the $2200 first place money VonDohren stormed under him in the fourth turn and charged to the checkered flag to earn his second main event win of the season. The Oley racer was just the narrowest of margins in front of second place finisher Cliff Quinn (Coopersburg) followed by Rick Schaffer (Woxall), early leader Bobby Trapper (Scranton) and Danny Erb (Boyertown).
Meme DeSantis earned a 10th place finish and continues to be the point leader in the Modifieds.
In the 20-lap main event for Late Models Junior Grebe got the lead when first lap leader Steve Todorow dropped out. And on a caution flag restart with just four laps complete current point leader Randy Stoudt as involved in a second turn incident that put him out of action. At the eight lap marker Grebe had the Zern’s Market No.73 in front of the pack with Harry Neiman pressuring However it was just a few laps later that Neiman was out of the race and Chris Shuey pressuring with the Harry’s U-Pull-It No. 21.
At 12 laps Grebe and Shuey pushed and shoved each other out of the top two spots but a caution put them back in front. At the 13 lap mark it was Shuey (Orefield) in front and that is where he stayed until the checkered flag fell. Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) came on strong in the final laps but had to settle for second. Junior Grebe (Gilbertsville) finished third followed by Jason Miller (New Tripoli) and Mike Kellner (Lansdale). The second place finish put Schutz and his Total Rental team in front in the point standings.
In qualifying events for the Late Models wins were earned by Junior Grebe, Chuck Schutz and Harry Neiman while the consolation went to Terry Snyder. The Jim Brown Cash Dash worth $175 went to Harry Neiman.
Preliminary events for the Modifieds were won by Jason Smythe, Jeff Strunk, Bobby Trapper and John Willman while consolation races went to Terry Meitzler and Kerry Kratz. The Cash Dash worth $320 was won by Jason Smythe.
