DESANTIS AND STOUDT BECOME FOURTH DIFFERENT FEATURE WINNERS IN EACH DIVISION THIS SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 24, 2004 . . . “The young guys are taking over. My time is just about over,” is pretty much the way Meme DeSantis summed it all up in victory lane at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night after winning the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature by just inches over Todd Marburger. By bringing the Norm’s Save Station No.357 home first DeSantis, who calls Temple home, became the fourth different winner and took home the top spot in the chase for the lucrative track Modified championship.
And in the 20-lapper for NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models it was point leader Randy Stoudt of Pottstown adding to his point lead by winning the feature event by a comfortable margin over Harry Neiman.
It took two restarts to get the 30-lap Modified feature rolling and Todd Marburger took control from his pole position starting spot. Larry Solomon gave Marburger a battle for the top money for much of the first 10 laps. A caution on the 10th lap saw Marburger and Solomon making contact with Marburger holding on to the top spot and Solomon losing a few positions.
At the 15 lap marker Marburger was busy holding off challenges from Jason Smythe (running one of his best efforts) with Solomon fourth and Meme DeSantis coming from 11th starting spot to run fifth. At 20 laps DeSantis had moved to third and by the 25th lap Marburger knew he had his hands full trying to hold off the hard charging DeSantis.
With two laps to go the “Temple Tornado,” showing no signs that his time is over and the youngsters are taking over, took command but a lap later Marburger took it back. Coming off the fourth turn toward the checkered flag it was a side-by-side thriller with DeSantis able to win the race by inches over Marburger (Pottstown). Third spot went to Jeff Strunk (Bethel) coming from 18th starting position followed by Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie) and Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood).
The companion 20-lap feature for Late Models saw Harry Neiman looking like he was going to be the man to beat as he set the pace for the 12 laps. Randy Stoudt, who had started in 12th spot, took control of the race on the 13th circuit after a multi car accident brought out a caution. For the final seven laps it was all Randy Stoudt and the Hutts Glass Co. No. 22 as he finished a comfortable margin in front of second place Neiman (Pottstown). Rick Todorow (Quakertown) came home third followed by Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Lou Egrie (Willow Grove).
Qualifying heats for the Late Models were won by Lou Egrie, Harry Neiman and Jason Miller while the consolation race was won by Lee Miller. In the Jim Brown Cash Dash the win went to Harry Neiman.
Preliminary events for the Modifieds saw wins go to Marburger, DeSantis, Mike Gular, Tom Umbernhauer and Keith Brightbill. Consolation victories were taken by Doug Manmiller, Kerry Kratz and Danny Erb while the Cheers Tavern Cash Dash was won by DeSantis giving him a clean sweep of events for the night.
