ALAN RUDALAVAGE CAPTURES SEASON OPENER CHECKERS AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN!

Lisle, NY- Newton Lake, PA's Alan Rudalavage had a perfect night filled with firsts Saturday at the Thunder Mountain Speedway. He drew first in the heats, drew 1st again in the feature re-draw, and went on to finish first in the highly competitive Modified division in front of a standing room only crowd on opening day.

Other winners on the card were Shawn Walker in Sportsman, Ken Hammond in Super Stocks, Dick Stark in Pure Stocks, John Powers in 4 Cylinder Modified, Bob Doolittle in 4 Cylinder Stocks, Paul Larow in Thunder Dogs, and Amber Patrick in the Thunder Pup division.

Rudalavage set the pace in the 30 lap Modified Main event, with Binghamton’s Steve Babicek riding outside pole. At the drop of the green it was Rudalavage taking command, with Paul Jensen, of West Edmeston, powering up to second. Binghamton’s Chris Weaver moved into third and diced in and out with Jensen for the second spot.

Rudalavage looked to be in command, but lapped traffic tightened up the lead trio, and with just three laps to go, Rudalavage had to check up behind two lap cars, momentarily losing the lead the Jensen. He quickly regained the lead before they came to the starters stand, and then cruised on for a one car length victory. Jensen finished second, with Weaver, Mike Colsten and Tom Rudalavage completing the top five.

The 20 lap Sportsman feather saw former Pure Stock stand-out Shawn Walker take over the lead from Mt. Upton’s Arnie Slade as the caution flew on lap four. Speedsville’s Kevin Jordan worked his way up from his sixth starting spot to take over the second spot from Slade on a lap fifteen re-start.

Jordan then put the pressure on Walker, but the Masonville youngster in his second season in a Sportsman was able to hold on and pick up the win. Jordan came in for second, followed by Slade, Marty Bunker and Ken Titus.

In the 20 lap Super Stock feature, Speedsville native Ken Hammond quickly moved up from his third starting spot to take over from row starters Mark Wainwright and Darl Ellis for the lead. Vestal’s Larry Hillis made short work of getting to the front as he flew from his 8th starting position to capture second from Ellis on the 4th lap.

Hillis tried for the top spot, but was unable to mount a challenge against the Hammond machine. Hammond cruised to victory, leading all but the first lap. At the finish it was Hillis for second, Ellis for third, Harold Humphrey fourth and Wainwright for fifth.

In the 20 lap Pure Stock main, Lansing’s ‘Dicin’ Dick Stark had to work his way up from the 7th starting position while Spencer’s Mike Wilbur and Johnson City native Mahlon Shoemaker battled for the top spots.

By the halfway mark, Berkshire’s Louie Gordinier and Stark moved into second and third ahead of Shoemaker and set their sights on Wilbur for the lead. With just three laps left to go, Stark was able to take over the top spot and go on for the win. Gordinier came through for second, with Wilbur, Buck Mills, and Shoemaker completing the top five.

South New Berlin’s John Powers took over the lead from Windsor’s Gordie Isham early on in the 15 lap Four Cylinder Modified division to capture the opening night victory. Waterloo’s Tom Fletcher and Sherburne’s Duane Knapp moved up into second and third respectively, but neither could get past the Powers ride.

Knapp took over the second spot, with Fletcher, Josh Taylor and Cal Pierce completing the top five finishers.

In the 15 lap Four Cylinder Stock class, Fred Newton II, of Whitney Point too the early race lead, holding off Marathon’s Mitch Eaton. Last years standouts Harold Humphrey, of Norwich, and Bob Doolittle, of Newfield, both made their way up to challenge Newton for the lead by the halfway point.

Humphrey took over the top spot as the flagger signaled the halfway point, with Doolittle following for second. A lap 14 caution for Hurlburt and Greg Reynolds set the stage for a one lap dash, and as the checkers flew it was Doolittle winning the drag to the finish, with Humphrey in for second. Newton came in for third, with Jason Tuttle fourth and Jeff Wilcox fifth.

Cayuta’s Paul Larow had a dominating performance in the 12 lap Thunder Dog feature event. Larow took the lead over Berkshire’s Ben Poirier at the start, and held off challenges from Berkshire’s Joe Sack, Newark Valley’s David Ackley and a late race charge from Owego’s Brady Foster to take home the win. Foster, Sack, Lloyd Twarz and John Coish completed the top five.

Berkshire teen Amber Patrick started last in the newly added Thunder Pup division, but quickly made her way to the front to capture the win in the 8 lap Feature Event.

This coming Saturday is Billy’s Auto Sales night at the newly re-configured 3/8 mile clay oval, with all eight classes on the card for the night’s action.
