DECKER, TITUS AND HAMMOND VICTORIOUS AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN!!

Lisle, NY - Mike Decker, of Gibson, PA took advantage of his pole starting spot to hold off some tough competition en route to picking up the win in the 30 lap Modified Feature Saturday night at Thunder Mountain.

Also making it into the winner’s circle were Ken Titus in Sportsman, Ken Hammond in Super Stocks, Dick Stark in Pure Stocks, Duane Knapp in 4 Cylinder Mods, Bob Doolittle in 4 Cylinder Stocks, Ben Poirier in Thunder Dogs, and Amber Patrick in Thunder Pups.

Decker, who finished 3rd in his qualifying heat, just making it into the feature re-draw, drew the number one starting position for the feature, and that was all he needed. Despite some heavy competition, Decker was able to lead the pack from wire to wire, holding off some of the areas best to pick up the win.

Newton Lake, PA native Tom McGurrin, Binghamton’s Jim Gabriel, Jr., and Paul Jensen, of West Edmeston all diced back and forth for position as the first 20 laps of the 30 lap event went green. As the checkers waved, it was Decker for the win, McGurrin in for second, Gabriel third, Jensen fourth, and Binghamton’s Chris Weaver in fifth.

In the 20 lap Sportsman feature event, Kirkwood’s Ken Titus took the early race lead from Cortland’s Scott Allen after a second lap re-start. Titus, who had started third, looked to be on a mission as he set a blistering pace, but last week’s feature winner Shaun Walker, of Masonville made his way up through the pack.

With just 5 laps to go, Walker took over the second spot and set his sights on Titus for the lead. Walker’s bid would come up short as Titus cruised to the victory by three car lengths. Allen finished third, with Berkshire’s Billy Spoonhower and Speedsville’s Kevin Jordan completing the top five.

Super Stock driver Ken Hammond, of Speedsville, figured he liked victory lane so much last week, that he’d visit it again. Hammond took the lead from Glenwood, PA native Dan Pompey at the start of the 20 lap event and never looked back as he had a dominating performance.

Binghamton’s Darl Ellis ran a solid second throughout the race, but had to hold off some serious late race pressure from Afton’s Wade Decker. At the line it was Hammond with the win, followed by Ellis, Decker, Harold Humphrey, of Norwich, and Homer’s Mark Wainwright.

There was a repeat winner in the Pure Stock division as well, as Lansing’s Dick Start made it two for two on the season. Stark started on the outside pole alongside Athens, PA’s Doug Stack for the 20 lap feature event, and grabbed the lead as the green came out.

Stack gave chase but was unable to make a run on Stark, while Groton’s Howard Jones, Berkshire’s Louie Gordinier, Endicott’s Rich Green, and Cortland’s John Morse all did battle for position.

As the checkers flew, it was Stark with the wire to wire win, followed by Stack, Jones, Gordinier and Morse.

Sherburne’s Duane Knapp took home his first victory of the season in the Four Cylinder Modified class. Knapp, who took the lead at the start of the fifteen lap event, held off challenges from last week’s winner John Powers, of South New Berlin, with a sizable lead.

Powers came in for second, with Waterloo’s Tom Fletcher, Windsor’s Gordie Isham, and Binghamton’s Jeremy Howe completing the top five.

In Four Cylinder Stock action, Newfield’s Bob Doolittle quickly made his way to the front from his sixth starting position to take command of the lead over Candor’s Lloyd Twarz by lap three.

Doolittle went on for the win by about a straightaway over Twarz. Lisle’s Jerry Wilcox and Jeff Wilcox finished third and fourth respectively, with Newark Valley’s Jason Tuttle in fifth.

In the 12 lap Thunder Dog feature, the story was all about Berkshire’s Ben Poirier as he lead wire to wire to capture his first win of the season.

Candor’s Lloyd Twarz and Newark Valley’s David Ackley battled for second until contact between the two set them both back in the field with just two laps to go.

At the checkers it was Poirier for the win, with Tim Gwardyak, in his first run of the season, in for second. Brady Foster, Michael Morse and Twarz completed the top five.

The 10 lap Thunder Pup feature had one of the night’s best battles as Berkshire’s Amber Patrick and Rich Gardner, of Chenango Forks duked it out side by side for most of the race. At the end, Patrick prevailed, making it two for two on the season.

Racing returns to the Mountain next Saturday evening with all eight regular classes on the schedule. Races are set to start at 6:30pm. Thunder Mountain is located off of route 79 in Center Lisle, New York.
