TOM MAYBERRY AND CHUCK SENNOTT EACH GET SECOND WINS OF SEASON
AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 20, 2001 . . . Veteran modified racing
talent Tom Mayberry won the 30-lap Dames Chevrolet NASCAR
Modified stock car feature on Saturday night at Grandview
Speedway and it was Chuck Sennott coming home first in the
20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature.
"You never give up hope. We just thought we would be
patient. The track came to us," said Tom Mayberry in victory
lane after winning his second of the season. The former track
champion had trailed Glenn Strunk for 18 laps before being
able to get by him on a restart after a caution. "When the
caution came out (with four laps to go) I thought Glenn might
have something for us. When we did not 'hear' him on the
first lap, we figured we were OK."
And Mayberry was OK as he drove the Mike Kelly owned A&T
Chevrolet/Long Insurance entry to victory picking up $2200
and valuable points as he chases his second track title.
Mayberry is celebrating his 25th season in the sport. Second
spot went to Glenn Strunk who chased Mayberry right to the
finish line and was up along side of him a couple times.
Third in the finishing order went to Craig VonDohren who came
on strong in the final laps. Doug Manmiller earned fourth
followed by Meme DeSantis.
Chip Slocum came from 29th to 8th to grab, unofficially,
the $200 Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger award.
In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models Chuck
Sennott, formerly from Upper New York State, followed the
Dodge powered Bill Henning for six laps before getting by and
setting the pace for the balance of the race. The victory was
the second of the season for Sennott and his Kochel
Equipment/National Penn Bank entry. Jason Miller, a rookie at
Grandview, gave Sennott a couple of challenges but had to be
content with second followed by Doug Walton, Ed Trimbur and
Bill Henning.
With close to 60 NASCAR Modifieds in the competition area
there were five qualifying heat races with victories going to
Glenn Strunk, Craig VonDohren, Bob Trapper, Ray Swinehart and
Tom Mayberry. The consolation races were won by Doug "Mopar
powered" Pannepacker, Kerry Kratz and Randy Bailey. And the
Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash, worth $345, was won
by Craig VonDohren in the Mrs T's Pierogies entry.
Qualifying events for the NASCAR Late Models went to Bill
Henning, Mike Bedell and Chuck Sennott.
