SLOCUM AND STOUDT TOP PERFORMERS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
Bechtelsville, PA May 22, 1999 . . . "The #61 crew worked
their tail off tonight. We have had motor problems the last
few weeks. We were not running that well tonight," said Chip
Slocum in victory lane after winning the 30 lap Luicana & Son
Kitchen & Bath NASCAR Modified feature race at Grandview
Speedway on Saturday night.
"I knew I was holding them back (challengers Rick
Schaffer and Jon Kellner) running the top (high groove of the
track). That is where you had to run tonight."
Slocum, winning his first of the season, then proceeded
to throw three tennis balls into the grandstands, cash value
of $10,$20 and $30.00. And each time Slocum wins a race at
Grandview Speedway, Cozze Motorsports (owners of his Giels
Automotive #61 Modified) will increase the value of the
tennis balls tossed to the fans.
In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Shortrack Late Models
the victory went to former champion Dean Stoudt, wheeling the
Kutztown Glass and Mirror entry. It was his first win of the
season and increased his lead in the chase for the lucrative
track late model title.
Junior Mikosz was first to the green flag for the start
of the 30-lap modified feature. Four laps into the feature
three time winner Tom Mayberry eliminated himself by getting
into the second turn wall. On the restart, after a multi-car
tangle brought out another caution, Junior Mikosz was kept
busy holding off Dave Faust and Chip Slocum.
At the eight lap marker Slocum motored to the front,
taking the lead at the start/finish line. Once in front the
Ewing Township, NJ bowling alley and tavern operator had his
hands full holding off challenges from Rick Schaffer and Jon
Kellner. Slocum took advantage of the high groove on the one-
third-mile clay banked oval to stay in front and pick up
$2,200 for his winning effort. Second spot, just a few feet
behind the winner, went to Rick Schaffer (Woxall) followed by
current Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth/Cummins PA NASCAR
Modified Championship Series point leader Jeff Strunk
(Bechtelsville), Jon Kellner (who ran second for several laps
(Lansdale)), and early leader Junior Mikosz (Reading).
The Luicana & Son Kitchen and Bath 20-lap feature for
late models had Scott Miley the leader at the start. Rookie
Ed Trimbur got the lead on the second lap but had mechanical
problems that caused him to slow in turn three on the third
circuit creating a multi car tangle. On the restart Roger
Decker was in front but spun while leading and that gave the
lead to Dean Stoudt who was able to ride to a "somewhat easy"
victory. Stoudt lead the final 16 laps and held off a
challenge from last week's feature winner Chuck Sennott. At
the finish the East Greenville racer had a three car length
cushion over second place finisher Chuck Sennott
(Gilbertsville). In third was Ed Hoffman (Allentown) followed
by Jeff Teets (Coplay). Teets came from the back of the pack,
with heavy sheet metal damage to his car, after being
involved in an early race accident. Fifth spot was earned by
Rick Todorow (Quakertown).
Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR Modifieds were won
by Jeff Strunk, Ken Lindaberry, Kenny Gilmore and Tom
Mayberry while the consolations went to John Willman and
Glenn Strunk. The Cash Dash was won by Kenny Gilmore earning
him $420.
In the late model preliminary events wins were earned by
Dean Stoudt, Lou Egrie and Roger Decker while the consolation
went to Mike Bedell.
