WILLMAN AND HENNING WIN GRANDVIEW NASCAR STOCK CAR FEATURES
BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 8, 1999 . . . The happiest guy in the
world on Saturday night may have been John Willman. He had
just on his first NASCAR Modified stock car feature race at
Grandview Speedway and he thanked just about everyone except
for, perhaps, the track caretaker.
Fantastic, great, unbelievable, and amazing were just a
few of the words that the veteran driver used in victory lane
after driving the Neil Bortz owned, O'Connor
Freightliner/Bandit Truck Stop modified to victory in the 30-
lap Black Horse Auto Body feature race.
"When I was running third I did not give much hope to
winning. When Jim Bagley dropped out and I moved into second
then I knew I had a chance to win," said the Zionville, PA
racer who had been trying for five years to win at Grandview
Speedway.
In the companion 20-lap main event for NASCAR Shortrack
Late Models the victory went to Bill Henning of Lansdale, PA
for the second time this season, Henning was at the wheel of
the WNPV-AM Radio/Hennings Supermarket sponsored entry.
Rookie sensation Todd Heydt (Boyertown) took control of
the 30-lap modified feature on the first lap and was in front
of the pack for 26 laps. Several drivers challenged the
rookie including veteran Jim Bagley, Kerry Kratz, Sam Martz
and Willman. At the midway marker three of the top
challengers including Kratz, Shawn Reimert and Jeff Strunk
tangled with Kratz unable to continue.
At 20 laps Jim Bagley broke while running second and was
out moving John Willman to second. Willman was able to get by
Heydt on the 26th lap and went on to win the main event and
the $2200 first place money. Heydt held on to record an
impressive second place finish in his rookie season of
competition. Kenny Gruber(Reading) (subbing for the injured
Donny Erb) grabbed third followed by Kevin Hartnett
(Perkasie) and Sam Martz (Whitehouse Station, NJ). Hartnett,
coming from 19th to finish 4th, an improvement of 15 spots,
earned the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger Award
worth $200.
In the 20-lap main event for NASCAR Late Model stock
cars rookie Ed Trimbur put his mount out front at the start
and set the pace for the first four laps. Bill Henning, with
one win under his belt, was look for a second victory and
took control of the show on the fifth lap. Randy Stoudt and
Henning put on a battle that had fans on the edge of their
seat for the balance of the main event with Henning able to
hold off the very strong efforts of Pottstown native Randy
Stoudt. In third was John Durling (Reading) followed closely
by Rick Todorow (Quakertown) and Junior Grebe (Boyertown).
Qualifying heat races for the late models were won by
Stoudt, Trimbur and Terry Snyder while the consolation race
went to Buddy Wharton.
The preliminary events for NASCAR Modifieds went to
Kenny Gruber, Kerry Kratz, Chuck Schutz and Jon Kellner. Tom
Mayberry (a three feature winner) and point leader Terry
Meitzler qualified for the feature by winning the consolation
races. Kerry Kratz earned $320 by winning the Cash Dash.

Mother's Day Eve, received a beautiful rose courtesy of
Baldwin's Flowers of Conshohocken, PA. And both the oldest
and youngest mother in the audience were presented with gift
baskets courtesy of P.K. Moyer Excavating and Ron and Emma
Schnable of the Towne Restaurant of Telford, PA.

return to the Grandview Speedway on Saturday, May 15 for a
doubleheader show featuring at least 13 events of stock car
racing. Warmups start at 7 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m.
A CHANGE IN THE SCHEDULE: The Bars Leaks United Racing
Club sprint cars will replace the late models as part of the
show on Saturday, June 12. The sprints and NASCAR Modifieds
will be the doubleheader attraction on Red Hill Ford Night.
