JIMMY HORTON BREAKS THE ICE: GRABS FIRST WIN OF SEASON AND WITH NEW TEAM AT EAST WINDSOR SPEEDWAY FRIDAY NIGHT
EAST WINDSOR, N.J. ~ After posting some top finishes, but also suffering through some dismal weeks caused by wrecks and mechanical failures, former driving champion Jimmy Horton of Somerville broke the ice Friday night and won the annual Don Jones Firecracker 25 for Modified stock cars at the East Windsor Speedway. It was Horton's first win of the season, his first since joining the Leach Racing Associates No. 99 team and his 116th at the track.
Horton started eighth in the 24-car field and rocketed into the top three almost instantly. He then chased early leader Mike Johnston of Franklin Park until taking the lead on lap three.
From that point on the veteran survived several caution flags as well as the attacks of eventual runner-up Kenny Brightbill of Sinking Spring, Pa. in the closing laps. Doug Hoffman of Allentown, Pa. was third, while Donny Radd of Ringoes and Wade Hendrickson of Lawrenceville completed the top five.
Al Cheney III of Cranbury raced to his fifth win of the year in the Street Stock 15-lapper and took over the point lead at the same time. The two-time and defending champion raced from 17th and into the lead on lap eight. Kevin Bifulco of Cranbury was the runner-up, while Freehold's Bryan Reed, Carol Whitehouse of Hamilton and Frank Dorry of Ringoes were third through fifth.
Bryan Godown of Ringoes grabbed his second win of the year in the 20-lapper for the Sportsman cars, holding off the late race challenge of Hightstown's Mike Lyons. Defending champ Art Liedl, Jr. of Flemington, who came from the rear of the 26-car field in a borrowed racecar, was third, with Rob Gallmayer of Stockton, fourth and John Gray of Clinton, fifth.
Jeff Busby of Seaford, De. won his second straight main event for the 360 Sprint Cars over local favorite Joe Zuczek of Trenton. Gary Thayer, Bruce Bowen and Jeff Taylor were third through fifth.
Friday night racing continues weekly at the East Windsor Speedway with the first green flag waving at 7:30 p.m. This Friday evening, July 12, the Modifieds battle in a 25-lapper, with the Sportsman cars racing 20-laps and the Street Stocks competing in a 15-lapper. The restored racecars of the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will also be a highlight of the evening. The 360 Sprint Cars will have the night off.
