TREMONT OUT-PERFORMS FIELD FOR 2ND WIN OF 1998
WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont took home the win in Saturday nights 30-lap modified feature. Bobby Hackel picked up his first win of the season in the 20-lap sportsman main. Adam Haas also visited victory lane for the first time in 1998 in the Street Stock feature.
Steve Devine led the early portion of the modified feature with Eddie Marshall and Donnie Corellis following. Dave Leckonbys night would end on lap four with mechanical difficulties. Eddie Marshall would battle Devine for the led on lap five, while Guy Sheldon and Jody Tornabenne raced for fifth. Meanwhile back in the pack Kenny Tremont had worked his way up to seventh and Brett Hearn was 12th.
The first caution of the feature flew on lap eight. The ensuing restart would see the biggest incident of the night. Donnie Corellis broke coming off turn two and the field bunched up behind him. Fortunately many drivers avoided the slowing car, but not everyone got away clean. Dickie Larkin went pitside during the yellow, but reentered the race.
Tremont was up to fourth by lap 10. Marshall would take the lead from Devine on lap eleven. Tremont took third by lap 12. Hearn, Todd Wilikinson, and Chris Moore had a torid battle for the ninth position during the middle portion of the feature. Tremont would catch the front running Marshall and pass him for the lead on lap 14. Sheldon and John Hewitt raced side by side for sixth and lap 15.
Tremont would open a big lead as the battle still raged on for ninth. Donnie Ackner and Devine raced for third on lap 20. Tremont would enter lapped traffic by lap 22, while Devine and Ackner still raced for third on lap 22. The final yellow flew on lap 25 for Jeremy Matthies. Ackner would grab third on the restart. Hearn was able to move up to seventh on lap 27. J.R. Heffner and Hewitt raced for sixth with two laps to go.
No one could catch the front running Tremont and he cruised home a full straightaway ahead of Marshall, Ackber, Devine, and Heffner. Hearn finished out of the top five for the first time in 1998 in sixth.
The start of the 20-lap sportsman feature would have the field going three and four wide for postions. Joe Bennett took the early race lead, while Bobby Hackel and George Marcus began the charge to the front. A yellow on lap four allowed Marcus and Hackel to battle for the lead on the restart. Marcus would grab the lead on lap five just before the yellow flew for several cars in turn two. One of the cars involved was Chris Kokosa.
Marcus would have to contend with Hackel for the lead on the restart. Behind them they would go three wide for second. Marcus would open up a ten car lead by lap nine. Ron Blake took sixth on lap nine. Marcus almost lost the lead when a lapped car spun in front of him. Roy Bridge was running third made contact with the spun car and was out for the evening.
Hackel made a bonzai move for the lead on the lap 13 restart and it stuck. Marcus would continue to chase Hackel the remainder of the feature. Several time Marcus got under Hackel but could not make the pass stick as Hackel took home the victory. Bobby Chalmers came home third, Art Collins fourth, and Ron Blake was fifth.
Todd Goldsteins night ended on the initial start of the 20-lap street stock feature. T.R. Bortle was the early race leader as the rest of the field set chase. Rob Yetman would take the lead on lap four as Danny Sanchez took second. The top two would break away from the pack by halfway. Rob Speed and Dave Streibel raced for the third spot on lap11. The top two would end their nights early, Sanchez hit the wall and was out on lap 14. Rob Yetman started dropping fluid on the track and was sent to the pits on lap 15. Robbie Speed would inherit the lead as a result, with Dave Streibel running second. Adam Haas and Lorne Browe raced for third on lap 16. Haas would take second on lap 17 and set after Speed. Haas was closing in the final lap when Speed hit the wall in turn three. Haas would cross the line first. Dave Striebel came home second, Scott Goversten third, Speed limped home for fourth, and Browe came home fifth.
