Moore Cruises to Second Victory of 1998 Season.
West Lebanon, NY---On Saturday night, Chris Moore of Pound Ridge piloted
his Moore Brothers racing #10 Troyer modified into victory lane for the
second time of the 1998 season. In the Sportsman division, 19 year old
Massachusetts driver, Bobby Chalmers won his first career feature, and
the IMCA feature saw Donnie Denue grab his first victory of the season.
Another Massachusetts driver, Rookie Street Stocker Ricky Duzlak of
Pittsfield, MA won his first ever street stock feature.
In the modified clash, Steve Devine started on the pole and held
the early lead. Two laps of racing saw two caution flags fly, and by the
third lap restart Moore had moved from his sixth starting spot into second
and was challenging for the lead. On the next lap Moore took the lead,
and he never looked back. But behind him, the action was heating up. Guy
Sheldon held his Saxton Sign "S" car in second, while Kenny Tremont who
had started back in 14th spot had piloted his new experimental Troyer bus
into third place by lap number five. On the very next lap Donnie Corellis
and Maynard Forette came into contact between turns three and four, and
gathered up a few more cars in the melee. On the restart in was Moore,
Sheldon, Tremont, Dave Lekonby, and Steve Devine.
Moore then began to open up his lead with some green flag racing,
while the battle for second between Sheldon and Tremont waged on. By lap
number eight, defending champion Brett Hearn had moved up into the top
five by passing Donnie Ackner, then and set his sights on the front-runners.
With ten laps down Moore had opened up a 15 car length lead and Sheldon
and Tremont continued their battle for the runner-up spot. Lap number 13
saw Hearn move up into fourth and the top four then moved away from the
rest of the pack. Moore remained unchallenged, but laps 19 and 20 saw a
fierce battle between Sheldon, Tremont and Hearn for second, third and
fourth spots.
Hearn took third place on the 20th lap and then powered past
Sheldon on lap 22. But there was still a half straightaway and heavy lap
traffic between him and Moore. Moore held on for the victory while Hearn
finished second, Sheldon third, Tremont fourth and J.R. Heffner rounded
out the top five. Moore also won the opening night feature in the 1998
season and has now grabbed sole possession of second place in points
behind Hearn.
Tony Laporta started on the pole, and jumped immediately into the
lead of the 20 lap Sportsman feature. Bobby Chalmers however was on the
move, and by the end of the third lap he had moved from sixth starting
spot into second. The yellow flag flew in the fifth lap, with LaPorta
in the lead, Chalmers second, and David Sanchez in third. On the restart,
defending champion George Marcus moved up into fourth. One lap later,
another yellow flag flew as several cars got together between turns three
and four. Chris Kokosa went into the pits as a result and last week's
winner, Ron Blake went back to the rear.
On the restart, Marcus moved into third, and began to challenge
Chalmers for second, but he was unable to get by. On an eighth lap restart,
Joe Bennett struck the wall on the front stretch and then Mike Boomhower
plowed into him. This brought out the caution again, and when the track
was cleared and the green once again flew, Chalmer was finally able to
take the lead from LaPorta.
By the half-way point, Bobby Hackel had moved up into third and
Jeff Cassidy had moved into the top five behind Marcus. On the 11th lap,
Dave Baranowski, who was about to be put a lap down, spun out coming out
of turn four, and took out Marcus and Cassidy. The single file restart
now showed the top five as Chalmers, LaPorta, Hackel, Sanchez and Art
Collins. A few green flag laps followed, and the top three cars opened
up a sizeable lead, but remained in single file. Collins continued to
challenge Sanchez for fourth, but was unable to overtake him. This was
Chalmers' first career win, and it came only two days after the young
driver celebrated his 19th birthday.
In the IMCA feature, Henry Tanner started on the pole and took a
strong early lead. By the seventh lap he had opened up a ten car length
lead, with Rich Colesanti running is second. On the tenth lap Denue
muscled past Colesanti into second. In the 14th lap, Denue and Tanner
ran side by side with Denue finally taking the lead. On the very next
lap, Craig Simmons lost power and put some liquid down all over the front
stretch. This brought out the first caution of the race. On the restart,
last year's high point man, Jeff Carr moved up into third behind Denue and
Tanner.
With one lap to go, the white and yellow flags flew together as
Steve Hough spun out all by himself coming out of turn two. As the field
raced for home in the final lap shoot-out, Henry Tanner lost the handles
coming out of turn four, spinning out, and giving Jeff Carr second and
Paul LaRochelle third. Colesanti finished fourth and Brian Wilbur fifth.
The Street Stock feature had Steve Brownell and Rich Fosby on the
front row, and they ran side by side leading the first lap. On the second
lap, Todd Parent lost a wheel on the back stretch causing an incident that
sent Victor Hopkins around where he was then struck head-on by rookie
Shane Peele. On the restart, Brownell took the lead, but he was overtaken
a lap later by Todd Goldstein. With three laps down, Dave Striebel,
driving the number 86, regularly piloted by Jerry Helms, moved into
second. Larry Turner was in third and Danny Sanchez fourth. Turner moved
steadily forward and took the lead on the 12th lap. With only one lap to
go, Sanchez got high between one and two, spun coming out of two, was then
struck by Robbie Speed and rolled over. On the restart, rookie Rickie
Duzlak passed Turner for the lead and sailed on to the victory. Duzlak
began the season in the rookie street stock division and quickly took two
victories, forcing him to move up to the Street Stocks. This was his first
week in the street stock points race.
