HEARN FIRST TO WIN TWO AT THE VALLEY IN '98
WEST LEBANON, NY- The action was fast and furious in the 30-lap modified
feature Saturday night as Brett Hearn took home win number two of 1998.
Ron Blake took the win in the 20-lap sportsman feature and Scott Goversten
won the 20-lap street stock feature.
The yellow flagged flew nine times during the 30-lap modified
feature. John Gibson and Maynard Forrette spun as they ran first and
second. The rest of the field had to scramble to avoid the spinning racers.
One driver that got caught up in the melee was Kenny Tremont. Tremont did
not make severe contact with anyone, but was forced to go back to the rear
with all the other cars that were in the incident.
Guy Sheldon inherited the lead on the restart. Dave Leckonby had a
strong run. He would take second on lap four and would take the lead on a
lap four restart. Meanwhile Brett Hearn and Rich Ricci were moving steadily
up through the field. Hearn had failed to qualify in the heat and started
24th. Ricci has also started in the middle of the pack. They would run
fifth and sixth respectively on lap five.
There was great racing up front. Larkin and Sheldon were racing for
second on lap seven. Hearn would grab fourth on lap eight. Tremont began to
make his move back to the front. He was twelfth by lap eight. The most
serious incident of the night occurred to the second restart on lap 13.
Several cars made contact on the front straightaway. Eddie Marshall went
over the front end of the Corellis #57 and flipped several times.
Fortunately all the drivers were all right.
Leckonby, Sheldon, and Hearn would go three wide for the lead on
lap14 with Hearn taking the top spot. Tremont had worked his way up to
fourth by the halfway point of the feature. Sheldon was able to hold off
Tremont's advances for the second position until lap 21. Hearn would see
his large lead disappear on a lap 22 caution for a flat tire on Chris
Moore's #10. Larkin and Sheldon came together on the restart on several
other cars piled into the wreck. This allowed Ricci to take the third
position. The top three would breakaway from the field by lap 24. A good
race for fourth and fifth between Leckonby, Don Ackner, and J.R. Heffner.
Tremont would not be able to run down Hearn in the final stages.
Ricci crossed the line third but was disqualified for being light in post
race inspection. This moved Leckonby up to third, Heffner fourth, and
Ackner fifth.
The yellow flag fever would also plague the sportsman feature. Mike
Mason would lose the early race led to Bobby Chalmers on lap two. George
Marcus and Chris Kokosa were both involved in a lap two incident in turn
four. Both were able to continue from the rear of the field. Bobby Hackel
had a good run going early, he was up to second by lap three. Opening night
winner, Art Collins was up to the fourth spot by lap four. Hackel would
battle Chalmers for the front spot and take it on lap eight.Ron Blake would
put himself into contention on lap nine by grabbing second. Action was
taking place up near the front. They were running two and three wide from
second on back. Disaster struck on lap eleven for the front running Hackel.
He would spin in turn two and collect Chalmers in the process. Blake would
take over at the point. Kokosa and Marcus had worked their way back to third
and fourth by lap 12. Kokosa take second and chase after Blake. Marcus would
grab third from Collins lap later.
No one was able to catch up to Blake in the final stages of the
event. Kokosa and Marcus would race for the second spot late in the race.
Kokosa would hold on for second and Marcus was third. Collin came home
fourth and Roy Bridge rounded out the top five.
Yellow fever was not as rampant in the 20-lap street stock event.
Danny Sanchez held the front spot for nearly half of the event. Scott
Goversten would take the top spot on lap eight. Sanchez would attempt to
get the lead back as Lorne Browe watched from third. Goversten would open a
big lead on the rest of the field just after halfway.
John Routhier was up to third by lap 12. Todd Goldstein had a tire
rubbing and was black-flagged on lap 14 he was running in fourth at the
time. Robbie Speed would take fourth on a lap 14 restart. Goversten
continued to dominate up front. Routhier and Speed had a good race late in
the going for third. Speed would take third on lap 18. Goversten cruised
home to his first win of the year. Sanchez came home second, Speed third,
Routhier fourth and Browe fifth.
Join us at the Valley next week for our big Memorial Weekend racing
action. Saturday night will see a full night of all the regular divisions
plus a ladies cannonball and a 4-cylinder demo derby.
