TREMONT WHEELS EXPERIMENTAL CAR INTO VICTORY LANE
WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont Jr. took home the
feature win in the 30-lap modified feature Saturday
night. Art Collins won the sportsman feature, but after
the race a protest was filed on the finish. A decision
will be made when the Lebanon Valley Board of Directors
meets on Tuesday night. Adam Haas took home the
checkered flag in the street stocks.
The start of the modified feature saw Dickie
Larkin take the lead from the outside pole. Tremont used
his fourth place starting spot to his advantage grabbing
second at the drop of the green. Todd Wilkinson would
move up into the third position on lap three. A little
further back in the pack would see three wide racing for
the 12th position. Tremont would begin to reel in Larkin
by lap five. Tremont took the lead on lap seven as the
leaders began to approach lapped traffic. Donnie Ackner
would move to fourth by lap nine.
Brett Hearn did not fire at the start of the
feature and was forced to start at the rear of the
field. He was quickly working his way up through the
pack and was 12th by lap ten.
John Hewitt had a good top five run going early.
He was fifth by lap eleven. At the halfway point Tremont
had a sizable advantage over the second place car of
Larkin. Hearn had moved up to eighth by lap 15.
Wilkinson was able to keep up with Larkin and the two
raced side by side through some lapped traffic.
When the caution flag flew for the first time on
lap 18, Tremont had a full straightaway advantage on
second. Hearn would grab sixth on the restart. Rich
Ricci Jr was patiently working his way to the front; he
sat seventh by lap 20. Hearn would take fifth from
Hewitt on lap 21. Meanwhile Tremont continued to
dominate out front. Eddie Marshall and Chris Moore ran
side to side for several laps in the late stages for the
eighth spot.
Hearn would grab fourth from Ackner on lap 28
and pass Wilkinson for third on the final lap. Tremont
easily took home his first win of the season. Larkin
hung on for second and Hearn had a great race to finish
third. A good run for Wilkinson to come home fourth and
Ackner rounded out the top five.
Saturday night was the first night for the
sportsman division in 1998. The drivers appeared to be
a little rusted judging by the number a caution flags in
the opening laps. Jason Tompkins would lead the event
early in the 20-lap feature. Dave Sanchez took the lead
away by lap three. Jeff Cassidy would run second by lap
four. Art Collins took second from Cassidy on the next
circuit.
Collins would give Sanchez a battle for the lead
by lap six. Chris Kokosa was moving up early. He had
managed to avoid several early race incidents and was
fifth by lap six. Sanchez would lose the lead the next
lap to mechanical woes and Collins inherited the lead.
A restart on lap ten allowed Kokosa to take second
place. Ron Blake put on a top five performance after
going to the rear early in the feature. He was fifth by
lap 11.
Collins was never seriously challenged for the
lead and took home the victory. Good racing for third on
back in the final stages of the event. Cassidy would
finish third, George Marcus fourth, and Blake rounded
out the top five.
The lead was not a good place to be during the
early portions of the street stock event. Four different
drivers all took the lead only to suffer mechanical
problems once they got there. When the front runners
finally stopped dropping out Adam Haas was the leader.
Todd Goldstein and Lorne Browe were chasing him. Rookie
driver Rob Yetman had a good run going late in the
event. He was running fifth and would eventually finish
eighth. Robbie Speed came from the rear after a late
race spin to finish sixth.
Haas proved untouchable in the front and took
home the checkered flag. Goldstein was second, Browe
third, John Routhier fourth, and Scott Goversten rounded
out the top five.
Cory Facini won the 15-lap IMCA modified main.
