MIKE LUTZ AND STEVE PAINE BIG WINNERS AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY … …..Mike Lutz, out of Mercer, Pa. Picked up his first win in the Empire Super Sprints last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. In the Modifieds, Steve Paine was back in victory lane. Rich Karlnoski took the surprise win in the PPG Super-Stocks. Tommy Austin was victorious in the Regional Pro-Trucks, while in 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Terry Povoski, and Donnie Smith were the winners. Adam Austin took the win in the Black Rock Bandits.

Mike Lutz has been racing with ESS for about a month, and pulled off a last lap pass of Ray Preston for his first win with club. As the green flag was dropped for the A-Main, Steve Dow and John Karklin Jr. were racing for the lead. These two were in lapped traffic as early as lap 7, and that's when Karklin had just taken the lead from Dow. The two made contact, and this sent Dow wildly flipping off turn three. Dow was O.K., but the #70 had to be double hooked off the speedway. As the race resumed, the battle for the lead was between Ray Preston and Mike Lutz. Lap 16 saw another red flag. This time for Bubby Kerrick flipping into the fence in front of the main grandstand. Kerrick was uninjured, but the 61 was badly damaged. When green was displayed again, Preston and Lutz continued to fight for the lead. Mike Woodring was on the charge and now was third. On the last lap Lutz shot by Preston and took his first win, Preston was second, Woodring third, Rick Wilson was fourth, and Ryan Coniam filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Steve Dow, Mike Woodring, and Mike Lutz. John Karklin took the dash, and Doug Emery was the B-Main winner.

Steve Paine was back on familiar ground last Friday night as he stood in victory lane after the 25 lap feature for the 358 Modifieds. He started in the 13th position, and was up to second by lap 10. Two laps later Paine took the lead, and Young hotshoe, Alex Hoag moved up to second, and this set the scene for the race for the win. Hoag kept pressure on Paine for the remaining laps, but could not get around the 7X, and Paine too the win. Hoag got a tight second. Third was Gil Tegg Jr., Bryon Turner, and Charlie Donk filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Chuck Graham, Derrick Podsiadlo, and Dave Yehl. Karl Comfort won the B-Main.

Rich Karlnoski was the feature winner in the PPG Super-Stocks. That in itself may not be a surprise. The fact that he won it in Randy Eggleston's 07 might be. Karlnoski's 55X had dropped a cylinder, and Eggleston offered the use of his car to Karlnoski. He took the 07 up through the field, and was racing for the win with Quinn Sutherland, Dale Welty, and Dave Fultz. Karlnoski got by Sutherland on the last lap and took the big win. Quinn Sutherland held on for second. Third was Dale Welty, and Dave Fultz and Bobby Teed filled out the top five. Sutherland and Welty were the heat winners.

Tommy Austin took the win in the Regional Pro-Truck division with a 4th to first move three wide move on lap 12. Tom Kessler looked to be the man to beat on this night until he spun in turn four, forcing the field to scramble behind him, and Steve scraped the wall. When the checkers flew, it was Austin in for the win, Ron Divens was second after a late race charge, Third was Eddie Machuga, fourth was Doug Buckley and rookie Brian Doolittle filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Tom Austin, and Jeff Barner.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing action, Terry Povoski took the win in the first of two features, second was Jack Ayers, third went to Alfy Clark, fourth was Scott Yaw, and Karl Weichenthal filled up the top five.

In the second feature, Donnie Smith took the win over, Phil Yaw, Eddie Crawford, Shawn Brace, and Les Irwin. Heat winners were, Scott Yaw, Terry Povoski, Donnie Smith, and Tim Povoski.

In the Black Rock Bandits, Adam Austin to the close win over a fast closing Brady Fultz, third was point leader, Ray Speicher, fourth was Josh Smith, and rounding out the top five was, Laverne Knickerbocker III.
