POINT LEADERS WIN AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY……..Point leaders in three of the five divisions that run at the Black Rock Speedway were winners last Friday night. Steve Paine continued his winning ways in the 358 Modifieds, Dave Fultz took the victory in the PPG Super-Stocks, and Steve Brace was victorious in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Jack Ayers and Tim Povoski shared victory lane, and Adam Austin took his first win of the 2002 season in the Black Rock Bandits.

If you were at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday, and you looked up in the night sky, you would have expected to see a full moon. A full moon to a race fan means a lot of yellow flags for on track incidents, and that's what happened on this race night, but, there was no full moon! The Modified feature was filled with yellow flags for various on track situations. Chuck Graham was the early leader, but Alex Hoag was on the charge early, and these two hooked up in a battle for the lead. Lap 5 saw one of many yellows waving, as Donnie Lawson got spun around on the back stretch, and Steve Paine was collected up in the incident. This put both drivers to the tail of the field. On the re-start, Hoag took over the top spot. With each one of the yellow flags Paine moved up through the field and was 8th by lap 11. At the half way mark, Alex Hoag was still at the top of the field. He was followed by Chuck Graham, Mike Jackson, Bill Deming and John Moravec. Lap 14 saw Paine move into the 5th position. Three laps later he moved to third and then to second, and he set his sights on Hoag. The veteran and the rookie battled for several laps until lap 19 when Paine took the lead in turn four on lap 19, and went in for another win. Charlie Donk charged through the field and took second on lap 23, Hoag was third at the checkers, fourth was Chuck Graham after a great drive, and John Moravec filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Jim Hull, Alex Hoag, and Mike Jackson. The B-Main was won by Brian Swarthout.

Yellow flags also plagued the PPG Super-Stock 20 lap main event, as there were several on track incidents slowing the race. The first few laps were yellowed flagged for minor pile ups. Once the racing got under way, it was Dave DuBois on top of the leader board, with Rich Karlnoski and Dave Fultz giving chase. Karlnoski took the lead on lap five and Fultz went with him to take second. These two speedsters then pulled away from the rest of the field. At the half way mark it was Karlnoski still in the lead over Fultz, Dave DuBois, Carl Cleveland, and Dale Welty. On lap 11 Dave Fultz took the lead from Karlnoski and went in for the popular win. Rich Karlnoski held on for second, Dave DuBois spun late in the event giving third to Quinn Sutherland. Fourth was Eddie Mills, and Carl Cleveland rounded out the top five. Heats were won by, Rob Conklin, and Dave DuBois.

Don Divens and Tom Austin started racing for the lead in the Regional Pro Trucks as soon as the green lights came on. Austin got by Divens and took the early advantage. Ron Divens was third, but he was in trouble as the hood on the #18 was coming adrift. He was later black flagged to make repairs. Lap 9 saw Don Divens head pitside with his #28, this put Steve Brace in the runner-up position. Austin began to pull away from the field, and just when it looked like he had the win in the bag, disaster struck him once again as he had a flat tire on the 88A. This put Brace in the lead, and he went on to take the big win. Bob Buono had a great run to take second, third was Keith Austin, fourth was Francis Furch, and Serenity pulled down a fifth place finish. Heat winners were, Tom Austin, and Steve Brace.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Jack Ayres and Terry Povoski battled all race long in the first of two features, with Ayres taking the win. Povoski held tight for second. Third was Karl Weichenthal, fourth went to Mike Hughey and Phil Yaw filled up the top five.

In the 2nd 4 Cyl. Stock feature, yellow flags dominated this event as well. There was also a lap 5 red flag, as veteran Del Cummings had a wild flip off turn three in his 03X. Cummings was O.K. after the wild ride. One lap later, Eddie Crawford and Nathan Daggett got together and slammed in to the front stretch was under the starter's stand, at the same time Gene DuPuy jumped "the ramp" on the inside wall. All drivers were uninjured. When racing resumed Tim Povoski and Jason White raced hard for the lead. At the checkers it was Povoski taking the victory. White was a close second, followed by Scott Yaw, Mike Buchanan, and Steven Ovens. Heat wins went to, Mike Hughey, Phil Yaw, Tim Povoski, and Eddie Crawford.

In the Black Rock Bandits, Adam Austin took the early lead and went on to take his first win of the season in the division. Second went to Laverne Knickerbocker III, followed by Ray Speicher, Trevor Sutherland and Andrew Jackson.
