PAINE TAKES 4TH MOD WIN AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY………Steve Paine out of Geneva, N.Y. drove to his fourth win of the 2002 season at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night. It was his second straight win at the popular Yates Co. speedplant. Dale Welty and his famous pink and black #1-2-3 took another close victory in the PPG Super-Stocks over Larry Knowles. Don Divens was the winner in the Regional Pro-Trucks, while Karl Weichenthal, and Scott Yaw took wins in the 4 Cyl. Stocks. Ray Speicher was the winner for the fifth time in the Black Rock Bandits.

Steve Paine seems to be back in the driver's seat at the Black Rock Speedway in the 358 Modifieds. This weeks win was his fourth of the season and second in a row. As has been the case for most of the season, he started in the 21st spot on the grid. Also, as was the case a week ago, Paine was able to move quickly up through the field due to many early caution flags. There were three yellows in the first two laps, forcing officials to re-start for the fourth time in single file. Paine had moved up to 10th spot without passing a car! Once the race finally saw some green flag laps, Ken Johnson took the early lead. The man that was really on the move was Derrick Podsiadlo, and he took the lead on lap 6. By this time Paine was up to fourth, but the leaders were going to be in some heavy lap traffic shortly. On the next circuit, Gil Tegg Jr. made contact with another car entering the turn three area and clipped a wheel off his mount, and he was done for the night. On the re-start Paine was in second place with a lapped car between himself and Podsiadlo. At the half way mark it was Derrick Podsiadlo on the point, Paine in second, third was Ken Johnson, fourth was Alex Hoag, and Aaron Jacobus fifth. Lap 15 saw the leaders in heavy traffic, and two laps later Paine shot by Podsiadlo inside turn four to take the lead. Paine never looked back as he ran away from Podsiadlo who was bogged down in traffic. Paine streaked under the checkered flag for his fourth win, Podsiadlo held on to second, third was Alex Hoag, fourth went to Mike Jackson, and Chuck Graham had a great drive to finish fifth. Heats were won by, Podsiadlo, Aaron Jacobus, and Rich Swarthout. The B-Main was won by Billy VanPelt.

Quinn Sutherland took off for the early lead in the PPG Super-Stock feature, but Larry Knowles and Dale Welty were on the move early. A lap seven caution came out as a Randy Eggleston spin in turn three scattered the field. On the re-start Larry Knowles and Dale Welty began to battle for the lead. The next circuit saw another yellow come out as Chris McCann spun into the opening in the curb in turn one. Knowles and Welty continued their battle for the lead and Rich Karlnoski was in third waiting for a mistake by the leaders. That mistake never happened, but, there was a red flag on lap 15 as the #3 of Fred Buckley caught fire. The flames were quickly snuffed out. Buckley was O.K. But his ride for the race was done. Welty and Knowles renewed their race for the win. With one lap remaining, Rich Karlnoski stopped in turn two with a flat tire, knocking him out of third place. This set up a one lap dash for the win. Welty stayed in front to the checkers, and Knowles took a very close second. Quinn Sutherland got third, fourth went toCarl Cleveland, and Bill Miller once again found his way to a top finish. Heat wins went to, Knowles and Welty.

Don Divens started the Regional Pro-Truck feature on the outside of the front row, and jumped out to the early lead. This was a lead he would never give up. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds. He had a late race challenge from Steve Brace, and these two drivers ran hard and close for the closing laps with Divens beating Brace to the wire by a bumper! Eddie Machuga was in the hunt for the whole race, and finished third. Fourth was Fred Buckley, and Jeff Barner was fifth. Heats went to the Divens boys, Ron and Don.

Karl Weichenthal took another win in the first of two 4 Cyl. Stock features. He took the lead on lap 13 in a 4 wide move in turn two that had the crowd on their feet. Mike Hughey finished second third was Skip Dean, fourth was Kevin Young, and Alfy Clark filled in the top five.

In the second feature, Scott Yaw found his way to victory lane after a hard fought battle with Kenny Hunt. Yaw took the lead on lap eight went in for the win. Hunt finished second, third was Phil Yaw in the Wallenbeck #24, fourth was Ryan Davenport, and Tim Povoski filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Mike Hughey, Karl Weichenthal, Kenny Hunt, and Mike White.

Trevor Sutherland looked to have the victory in the Black Rock Bandits well in hand. He took the lead and ran away and hid from the field, Ray Speicher was second, but could just barely see the leader! Then it happened. A yellow flag for a twin spin in turn four by Jamie Schuyler and Josh Smith. This put Speicher on the back bumper of Sutherland on the re-start. Speicher won the race to flag taking his fifth win of the season. Trevor Sutherland held on for second, third was Brady Fultz in the Skip Dean #74, fourth was Adam Austin, and Derek Mills filled in the top five.

One on one spectator races were also held, and Willy Grant Jr. was the car division winner, and Darryl "The Grey Ghost", Saunders was the truck and overall winner.
