GIL TEGG JR. BECOMES 4TH DIFFERENT MODIFIED WINNER IN AS MANY WEEKS AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY……….Gil Tegg Jr. became the 4th different winner in 4 weeks in the 358 Modified division at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night! Defending track champion, Dave Fultz pulled down his second win of the season in the PPG Super-Stocks, and "Racer" Ron Divens became the sixth different winner in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl Stock racing, Karl Weichenthal, and Donnie Smith, were the winners, while Ray Speicher grabbed his third win of the season in the Black Rock Bandits.

Steve Paine continues to be the only double winner in the 2002 season in the 358 Modifieds at the Black Rock Speedway. But his win streak stopped there, and he hasn't won at Black Rock since April 26th. On this night, Brewerton Speedway had canceled their racing for the night, so several "invaders" were in the Modified field , including young Modified sensation, Matt Sheppard, Tom Juhl, Frank Doll Jr., and Mike Payne. None of these drivers were able to crack the top ten. There was an early yellow in the Modified feature on lap 2 for Bryon Turner as he was trying to get his smoking Modified to the pits. On the next circuit, there were cars scattered all over turn four. Three up against the inside curb, Ken Johnson, Jim Hull, and Matt Sheppard, and Mike Payne was against the outside barrier. Sheppard and Payne had to towed from the scene, and were done for the night. On the re-start, Rich Swarthout grabbed the lead and quickly began to pull away from the rest of the field. Meanwhile, Brian Swarthout and Gil Tegg Jr. were having a wheel to wheel battle for second and third. The "Hurricane" was on the move up through the field and was 9th by lap 9, and three laps later was in 7th. The half way point in the 25 lapper saw Rich Swarthout still your leader, Gil Tegg Jr., was second, third was Brian Swarthout, Alex Hoag was fourth, Stacy Jackson fifth, and Steve Paine was sixth. Paine moved to fourth on lap 15. A good looking battle for the lead had developed between Rich Swarthout and Gil Tegg Jr., and on lap 17 Tegg Used a lap car for a pick in turn three and got by Swarthout for the lead. Paine was now third and was chasing Rich Swarthout for second. With two laps to go, Paine got around Swarthout, and set his sights on Tegg. But, once again, it was too little, too late, as Gil Tegg Jr. took his first Modified feature win at Black Rock. Steve Paine was second, third was Rich Swarthout, fourth went to Brian Swarthout, and Stacy Jackson filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Stacy Jackson, Tim Sebring, and Charlie Donk.

The feature event for the PPG Super-Stocks came down to the wire between two former track champions, Dave Fultz, and Dale Welty. Three and four wide racing was the norm in this event and it started on the first lap. Eddie Mills claimed the early lead, but mechanical woes reared their ugly head early and the 96 stopped on lap three. On the re-start, Chris McCann's Multi Media Services 4JM took over the lead. Dave Fultz was on the move early and was fourth by lap 8, and on the next circuit he was up to second. By the half way mark, Fultz was in the lead, followed by Chris McCann, Dave DuBois, Dale Welty, and Bill Miller. With just three laps to go, Welty had worked his way up to second and was working hard on Fultz for the lead. For the final three laps of this event, these two veteran drivers had the crowd on their feet as they ran side by side just inches apart! With the checkers flying, these two were dead even coming out of the fourth turn, coming down to the wire it was Fultz taking the win by half a car length over Welty! Dave DuBoise was third, fourth went to Bill Miller, and Fred Buckley filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Bill Miller, and Rob Conklin.

Six races, six different faces. That's what the Regional Pro Trucks have produced in victory lane so far in the 2002 season at Black Rock. The newest addition to the list of winners is "Racer" Ron Divens. He took off for the early lead in this one and was quickly challenged by Tommy Austin and Steve Brace. Divens began to pull away, and let Austin and Brace race for second and third. Austin was forced out of this battle on lap 15, as he got sideways on the front stretch, and went over the "ramp". The battle for the lead now was between Ron Divens and Steve Brace. When the checkers flew, it was Ron Divens in for his first win of the season, Steve Brace was second, third went to Tommy Kessler, fourth was Fred Buckley, and Eddie Machuga filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Keith Austin and Tommy Kessler.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Karl Weichenthal picked up his fourth win of the season in the first feature, after making an outside move on Jason White in turn four to take the lead for good. White held on for second. Third was Terry Povoski, fourth went to Jack Ayres, and Alfy Clark rounded out the top five.

In the second 4 Cyl. Stock feature, "The Jungle Duck", Donnie Smith took his first win of the season. He took the early lead, and pulled away early in the event. Eddie Crawford and Josh Mills started to catch Smith late in the event, and they ran out of laps. When the checkers flew it Donnie Smith across the line first, Eddie Crawford got second, third was Josh Mills, fourth went to Skip Dean, and Willie Grant Jr. filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Mike Hughey, Jack Ayres, Karl Weichenthal, and Brian Crawford.

Raymond Speicher took his third win of the season in the Black Rock Bandits. He took the lead on lap five and began to draw away from the rest of the field. He looked to have everything in hand until a lap 8 caution put point leader Jon Wallenbeck right on his back bumper for a two lap shoot out. Spiecher was able wo withstand all challenges, and took the win over Wallenbeck. Third was Laverne Knickerbocker III, fourth went to Derek Mills, and Steven Ovens.
