EYE OF THE "HURRICANE" SEES CHAMPIONSHIP AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY…Steve Paine moved another step close to a record breaking 4th consecutive championship in the 358 Modifieds at the Black Rock Speedway, as he took another feature win in the division. Dave Fultz also moved closer to the Championship in the PPG Super-Stocks as he took another win in that division. Steve Brace was the winner in the Regional Pro-Trucks, and he too moved closer to the championship. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Jake Clancey took his first win of the season, A Jay Potrzebowski was also victorious. Steven Ovens took the win in the Black Rock Bandits, and broke the points tie between himself and Jon Wallenbeck.

Steve Paine is having the kind of season most drivers dream about. He has been dominant here this year and is on the verge of a record breaking fourth consecutive track title in the Modifieds. Dan Mathews took the early lead in the 25 lap main for the 358's. The yellow flew early, as on lap three there were three Modifieds in the back stretch wall in turn two. Derrick Podsiadlo, Bryon Turner, and John Moravec were stopped on the speedway. All were able to pull away, but Moravec had to go to the pits. Scott Benedict took the lead on the re-start, and Todd Henderson was trailing, Gil Tegg was third, and looked like a man on a mission. Tegg took the lead in turn four on lap five, and began to pull away. The "Hurricane" warnings were up in the area, as Paine was on his way up through the field, and was 6th by lap 9. Two laps later Paine was third, and was racing with Curt VanPelt for the second position. At the half way mark the top five were, Tegg, VanPelt, Paine, Donk, and Sebring. On lap 14 Paine got around VanPelt for second, and had Tegg in his sights. Lap 18 saw another yellow flag out, and this put Paine right on Tegg's rear crash rail. Three laps later, Paine got by Tegg for the lead. Charlie Donk was now after Tegg for second, and got the runner-up spot on lap 24. At the checkers, it was Paine in for the win, Donk was second, Tegg third, Curt VanPelt got fourth, and Tim Sebring filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Gil Tegg, Lance Dussett, and Curt VanPelt.

Dave Fultz has fun racing. He has said so on many occasions. This year he must be having a ball. He has won several features, and looks to be on his way to his first championship in the PPG Super-Stocks. Fultz took the lead at the end of lap six. Dale Welty was on the move up through the field, and by the halfway mark was chasing Fultz for the lead. But this was to be Fultz's night as he pulled away for the win. Welty held on for second, third was Chris Daugherty, and Rich Karlnoski and Kevin Chilson filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Carl Cleveland, Chris Daugherty, and Dave Fultz. Steve Brace is another man destined for glory this year, as he seems to be on his way to the championship in the Regional International Pro-Trucks. He methodically picked his way through the field on this night, and took the lead on lap 11, and cruised home for the win. Ron Divens, early leader, Jeff Barner, Tom Austin, and Don Divens followed him across the line. Jeff Barner and Ron Divens were heat winners.

Jake Clancey finally had a chance to bask in the limelight of victory lane in the first of two NAPA 4 Cyl. Stock features. It was not an easy win, as he had to hold off the hard charges of Jason White and Joe Povoski. But when the checkers were in the air, it was Clancey first across the line. Jason White was second, Joe Povoski was third, Jack Ayers fourth, and Shawn Brace filled out the top five.

In the second feature, A Jay Potrzebowski took the lead on lap four and came home the big winner. Following him across the line were, Ray Hyer, Karl Weichenthal, Ryan Crawford, and Mike Hughey. Heat winners were Jake Clancey, Jack Ayers, Jason White, and A Jay Potrzebowski.

There was a tie for the point's lead in the Black Rock Bandits going in to this race. This all changed dramatically in turn two on the opening lap as Jon Wallenbeck, who was tied with Steven Ovens for the point title, spun with Jamie Schuyler and Nathan Daggett. All three cars had to re-start at the tail of the field. Wallenbeck could do no better than a 12th place finish on this night. And here's the bad news for Jon Wallenbeck. Steven Oven's won the feature, and probably the championship. He now has a 26-point lead in the division. Adam Austin was second in the feature, third was Travis Berardo, fourth were Laverne Knickerbocker III, and Frank Guererri Jr., filled out the top five.
