PAINE, WELTY, AND BUCKLEY VICTORIOUS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY…Steve Paine stood in victory lane once again at the end of the 25 lap Modified main at the Black Rock Speedway. Dale Welty was the big winner in the PPG Super-Stocks; Fred Buckley was the victor in the Regional International Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Racing, Joe Povoski, and Donnie Lawson were winners, and Josh Mills won the family fight, and took the win in the Black Rock Bandits.
If yellow is your favorite color, then you were in "7th Heaven" last Friday night in the 358 Modified feature. Yellow is the color of Steve Paine's 7X, and it is also the color of the flags that were flying so many times during the 25 lap main event. Paine started this event in the 13th spot on the grid. It didn't take long for him to make his charge to the front, as he was using the "Paine Lane" to his advantage. He was in sixth by the second circuit. Point leader, Charlie Donk was also on the move, and took the lead on a lap six re-start, and Paine was a real tight second, and early leader, Scott Benedict was third. Donk and Paine were racing each other hard and clean for the lead. Paine's car was working better in the high groove in turns 3 &4, and Donk's was working in low groove in 1 & 2. So this made for an interesting race for the lead. While this entire racing was going on the yellow flag was flying for various spins, and cars stopping on the speedway.
Lap 18 saw a five car wreck in turn four involving Tim Sebring, John Moravec, Scott Benedict, Todd Henderson and Steve Mandell. Moravec's #1 was sitting on top of the front end of Sebring's mount. It was a lengthy process to remove these two cars, so the field was stopped on the track. This was to work to Paine's advantage. On the re-start, Paine took off and won by several car lengths over Charlie Donk. Third was Alex Hoag, fourth was Ray Bliss Jr., and Gil Tegg Jr., was fifth. Heats were won by, Tim Sebring, Scott Benedict, and Aaron Jacobus.
Dale Welty had a smile on his face once again. He was standing in victory lane again at the end of the 20 lap PPG Super-Stock feature. Welty was having a lot of success in the early part of the season, he looked unbeatable. Then the bottom fell out. He was involved in a few wrecks, had several flat tires while leading, and found himself in 9th place in the point standings! But this night was to be his. He was battling with Chris McCann for the early lead, and took over the top spot in turn four on lap four, and then he ran away and hid from the rest of the field. When the checkered flag came down, Welty was the winner, three time feature winner, Dave Fultz was second, third was Rich Karlnoski, fourth went to Rob Conklin, and Dave DuBois filled out the top five. Dave Fultz takes over the point lead in the division with his second place finish, as point leader, Carl Cleveland seventh in the event. Welty, Rich Karlnoski, and Jim Schuyler won heats.
Fred Buckley took the feature win the Regional International Pro-Truck division. He took over the top spot on a lap seven re-start. Once out in front Buckley was gone, and nobody was going to get near him for the remainder of the event. When it was over, Buckley took the victory, second was Eddie Machuga, third was Bob Buono, fourth went to, Ron Divens and Jim Roberts filled out the top five. Bob Buono and Tom Austin took heats. In the first of two NAPA 4 Cyl. Stock features, Joe Povoski took his seventh win of the season, he took the lead on lap 10 and went in for the win. Karl Weichenthal was second, third was Scott Bradley, fourth went to Jason White, and Jake Clancey filled out the top five.
In the second feature, Donnie Lawson picked up the popular win after a tight finish with Scott Yaw finishing second. Third was Mike Hughey, fourth went to Phil Yaw, and Skip Dean rounded out the top five. Heats were won by, Scott Yaw, Mike Jackson, Jack Ayres, and Karl Weichenthal.
In the Black Rock Bandits, it looked like a sure victory for Derek Mills, that is until lap 9 in the fourth turn when he brushed the wall and Josh Mills got by and took the win in Chuck Leasure's 29C. Third was Tyler Avery, fourth went to point leader Steven Ovens, and Nathan Daggett filled out the top five.
