VIC COFFEY TOOK TOP HONORS LAST TUESDAY NIGHT ABOARD THE COORS LIGHT SUMMER NATIONALS

AT RANSOMVILLE SPEEDWAY

A great crowd was on hand for the eighteenth annual Coors Light Summer Nationals at Ransomville Speedway last Tuesday night. Alex Friesen certainly would have been proud as his family did up the night in style with an awesome fireworks show before some thirty-two 358 DIRT Modifieds were turned loose for one hundred laps.

When the checkered flew in the Turning Stone Casino 358 DIRT Modified feature, it was Vic Coffey taking the big win aboard his Sweeteners Plus owned #32c. Coffey took over the top spot on lap 47 and held it the remaining 53 circuits to take the checkered. It was a Bicknell chassis sweep as Tim McCreadie and Pete Bicknell rounded out the top three.

Alan Johnson took the lead at the drop of the green followed closely by Frankie Caprara, Sam Crogan, Todd Burley, and Brett Hearn. Steve Paine was on the charge early as he took over the second position followed by Hearn. The top hree had caught the back of the pack by lap 12 before the first caution flew on lap 14 for Don Spatarico who ended up in the moat after contact with another car on the front stretch. The restart found Alan maintain the lead before Painetook over the top spot on lap 17. Hearn dropped slightly into the moat attempting to pass Johnson. Upon returning to the racing surface, Hearn and Johnson made contact sending Hearn into the guardrail. Hearn headed pitside along with Alan who suffered a flat tire.

The restart found Pete Bicknell a little anxious resulting in a no-start. This almost spelt disaster as the pack got on the binders hard with several coming together in the first turn. Paine set the pace on the restart and maintained the position before Bicknell took over the lead. Paine, Vic Coffey, Frankie Caprara, and Tim McCreadie rounded out the top five. Danny Johnson broke into the top ten aboard the back-up car of Caprara’s. Johnson suffered a blown engine in his own #27j during time trials.

Bicknell continued to show the way as Coffey got by Paine for the runner up spot. Coffey continued his charge to the front pressuring Bicknell lap after lap. Alan Johnson’s night came to an end on lap 36 as he suffered mechanical woes. Coffey continued to challenge Bicknell and took over the top spot on lap 47. Johnson was also able to get by Bicknell for the second position. The caution flew on lap 75 as Paine made contact with Burley resulting in Burley going around in turn four. Burley showed his displeasure with Paine and ended up black-flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Coffey set the pace on the restart with Johnson in tow. A caution for debris bunched up the field on lap 88. During this caution period, it was apparent that Johnson was suffering a flat tire. Johnson attempted to continue on but ended up heading pitside for a new right front sneaker. Coffey, McCreadie, Bicknell, Matt Sheppard, and Paine rounded out the top five. The restart found Coffey setting the pace with McCreadie a tight second. Johnson slowed once again causing a caution with just nine laps remaining.

The remaining laps found Coffey maintain the top spot and take the big win at his Friday night home of Ransomville Speedway. McCreadie, Bicknell, Sheppard, and Paine rounded out the top five.

Steve Paine of Waterloo, NY set the JE Pistons fast time with a speed of 78.612 MPH while Tim McCreadie set second fastest time with a speed of 78.456. Heat winners were Vic Coffey, Matt Sheppard, Pete Bicknell, and Alan Johnson. After blowing his motor in his own 27J, Danny Johnson won the consolation event.

Driving his Johnny Cocco owned #7, Kerwin took the lead on the backstretch of turn one and led the entire twenty-laps. Dave Schulz challenged on the final two laps but had to settle for second followed by Pete Stefanski, Jon Miller, and Jeff Martin. 4 cautions slowed the event.
