COFFEY, MARTIN, STEFANSKI, BEN, AND CONDREN TAKE CHECKEREDS;
JOHNSON, BRACHMANN, AND STEFANSKI CLAIM TITLES
RANSOMVILLE, NY...The Modified Season finale couldn’t have been scripted any better for teammates Danny Johnson and Vic Coffey. Coffey, who had finished second twice this season at the big “R”, topped the field aboard the Mighty Taco Modified 40 lap event while Johnson captured the points title.
Billy Krull led the early stages of the event before Coffey took over the lead on lap 15 aboard his Sweeteners Plus entry. Coffey quickly distanced himself from the remainder of the field as Todd Burley and Johnson made their way to the front. Contact between Brian Stevens and Pete Bicknell sent Bicknell off and into the moat. A caution would be thrown to allow Bicknell to return to the racing surface and the officials the opportunity to relegate Stevens to the rear of the field.
Coffey continued to show the way as Burley and Johnson battled for several circuits for the runner up position. As they two battled, they also closed the distance on Coffey. Johnson was able to secure the runner up position but ran out of time as Coffey collected a very popular first win at Ransomville. Johnson, Burley, Scott Wood, and Bicknell rounded out the top five.
In Sportsman competition Don Martin of Youngstown, NY captured his third of the season and second in a row. The veteran racer took the lead away from Dave Just on lap seven and was never seriously challenged after that.
Rookies Jim Zimmerman and James Strassburg led the field down for the start with Strassburg taking the early lead. Zimmerman lost the handle in turn four and collected top point runners Randy Chrysler and Kevin Wills. Chrysler was aboard his back up car as he suffered mechanical woes during his heat action. Unfortunately, Chrysler was unable to continue as he suffered from end damage in the accident. Wills rejoined the field tail after a quick duck pitside.
Strassburg set the pace followed by Dave Nashwinter, Wayne McKie, Just, and Bob Winters. Just made a great three abreast move coming off turn two to take over the top position. Following suit was Martin as he moved into second. The two battled side by side with Martin taking control on lap seven. McKie’s good run came to an end as he slowed on the front stretch with mechanical problems. Chad Brachmann and Stewart Friesen were involved in a battle for position and points with Brachmann getting the upper hand. At the finish it was Martin followed by Just, Brachmann, Friesen, and Jeff McGinnis. Jamie Friesen was piloting the Dickie Blake entry and finished in eighth. Bra chmann captured his second Sportsman title in a row.
The Stefanski brothers had a great night as Joe won the 20 lap Prostock event and Pete took home the title. Joe took the lead away from John Zimmerman in the early going and held off challenges from Jeff Martin in the closing laps. Martin held on for second followed by Steve Lewis, Jason Boyle, and Dan Shoop.
The Streetstock twin events were won by Eric Ben and Jerry Condren. For Ben it was his first win while Condren picked up his fourth. Alex Morris, Joe Rickard, Shawn Graham, and Shawn Parker rounded out the top five in the first event while Dan Baughman, Don Barnes, Ken Washburn, and Wayne Close rounded out the top five in the second event. The double points closed things up going into the final week as just 4 points seperate Buzzard and Washburn. Pete Coppins celebrated his 40th birthday in style as he switched from being the pace car driver to a race car driver for the night.
Janice Strassburg won the demolition derby which found some thirty five entries.
Coming up Friday includes the Southern Ontario Sprints, the DIRT Prostock Tour, and the Streetstocks who will crown their champion.
