VARIN WINS FIRST OF YEAR AT CAYUGA COUNTY
WEEDSPORT, NY...Bobby Varin won his first DIRT Modified feature of the year last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. "Tire wear seemed to be at a minimal," stated track officials after looking at the first three finishers in Cyper- Series One, Race Two. Concerns over speedway surface conditions have had Cayuga County track maintenance workers logging overtime in efforts to return the racing surface after track treatments caused abrasive conditions the last few weeks. "We laid new clay and worked it in," commented track owner Glenn Donnelly. "We also gave new right rear tires to all of the teams present this week, that attended the week of June 6 in an effort to help defray their cost of running on that treated surface."
Also claiming victory in the 20-lap Sportsman feature was James Spano from Auburn, NY, the proverbial second place finisher at the speedway this year. Ron Hawker won the Pit Stop Convenience Stores 40-lap enduro and Don Alvord won his first IMCA Modified feature of the year in that division's special appearance at Cayuga County.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified main, seen on the internet, went green to checkers as the super smooth racing surface allowed the drivers to find different grooves around the three-eighths mile oval. Ray Bliss Jr. held the lead at the drop of the green and continued to lead until lap 19, when Bobby Varin passed for the lead. Varin then proceeded to pull away to a fifteen car advantage over Bliss, Tom Sears Jr., Billy Decker and Danny Johnson.
Varin seemed to be able to hold his lead over Billy Decker, who passed on lap 25 for the runner up position. Danny Johnson finished third followed by Tim McCreadie in his new Troyer four link car and Sears Jr..
A special 5-lap Fred tanner Construction sponsored Dash-for- Cash saw Scott Prentice pocket an additional $200 on the night. In the 20-lap Sportsman main event Matt Sheppard pulled away from the field to create a 20 car advantage for himself over James Spano. Spano worked the outside groove and pulled in on Sheppard by lap 8. A high pass in the fourth turn two laps later saw Spano take the lead for good.
The only yellow of the event came on lap one, when Mike Button was involved in a first turn accident with Chris Ridsdale. Button bend up the front end of his car too severely to continue. Following Spano across the finish line were Sheppard, Loren Lincoln, Greg Doust and Vince Vitale to round out the top five. A special appearance was on tap for the IMCA Modifieds.
Fourteen cars were on hand in a 15-lap feature that saw Don Alvord pass Carmine Uona on lap six and come home the winner. This Sunday racing returns to Cayuga County when a regular program of DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman and Enduro will see the first demo derby of the year added to the feature line up. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
