Lake Moc-A-Tek Beats Weather, Ricci Repeat Winner
The Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway stole a win from Mother Nature on
Mother's Day Weekend as they were able to get their second race of the
season in the books despite difficult conditions. Persistent afternoon
rains followed by a very chilly evening made for a less than ideal
evening, but the show went on with Mike Ricci winning his second
consecutive 358 Modified feature. Tom Laner Jr. won his first Sportsman
feature of the season while Mike Loney repeated in Street Stock action.
Franklin Bush was the Pure Stock winner with Richie Hartman taking Micro
Sprint honors.
Newcomer Barry White grabbled the early lead in the 25 lap 358
Modified feature with Bill Resse in hot pursuit. As White and Reese
battled for the top spot, Ricci was picking his way steadily forward from
deep in the field. Several caution flags for minor incidents in the
early stages kept the field tight and helped Ricci work his way into
contention, taking the top spot with a daring double pass of both White
and Reese. Unfortunately for White, his fine run ended on the back of
the tow truck after a collision damaged the front end of his mount.
Reese chased Ricci the rest of the way, but could not mount a charge and
Ricci drove his Apple Valley Golf Course/Gen Plus Teo ProCar to his
second straight win at Lake Moc-A-Tek. Resse, making his return to Lake
Moc-A-Tek this season finished second trailed by Brian Malcolm, Tom
Oleski, and Joey Grammes. Troy Weisenfluh, Ed strada Jr., Kip Timmer,
Billy Thornton, and Russ Strausser completed the top ten.
Tom Laner Jr. picked up his first official win of the season in the
Sportsman division. Laner won the held-over feature from the final night
of the 2000 season during the final practice night, but that win was
recorded as a win for the 2000 season. Laner found the outside groove to
his liking as he ran the top of the speedway enroute to victory. Alex
Knopka challenged Laner, but could not get a run on the low groove and
settled for a runner-up finish. Previous week feature winner Brad
Grammes had another strong drive to finish third with defending champion
Ralph Mele and Kevin Kresge completing the top five. Bob Grammes, Rocky
Rosetti, Mike Marold, Darren Stout, and Anthony Reggie rounded out the
top ten.
Mike Loney picked up his second consecutive feature win aboard his
Bolus Trucking #17D. The win was not an easy one for Loney as he had
plenty of challenges from both Chuck Davis and Mike Van Tassel. Davis
was able to keep the pressure on Loney all the way, but Mike never
wavered and drove to victory. Davis finishes second with VanTassel
third. Jim Sykes recovered from a mid-race incident to finish fourth
with Joe Krisovich rounding out the top five. Jerry VanTassel, Jim
Hughes Jr., Neil DiBlasi, Kevin Simko, and Dave Slate made up the second
half of the top ten.
Franklin Bush picked up the win in the Pure Stock division. Bush's
win was the first of the season not only for him but for a four cylinder
powered car since the four cylinders were incorporated into the pure
Stock ranks this season. Jeff Simko finished second trailed by Keith
Villano, Ray LaMonica, and Floyd Schmidt.
Richie Hartman led flag to flag to claim his first Micro Sprint
feature win of the season. Mike Keppler finished second with AJ Bast,
Jerry Mack, and John Hagen rounding out the top five.
