Colsten, Sharpsteen Take Victories At Penn Can Speedway

SUSQUEHANNA, PA =AD Mike Colsten visited victory lane for the first time this

season at Penn Can Speedway on Pine Line Auto Sales night. In addition,

Gene Sharpsteen took home a bounty he won over Dan Stone in the late model

division, Scott Conover won his third feature of the season in the Street

Stock class, Daryl Ellis won his first ever Pure Stock feature and Steve

Hartman won the IMCA race.

Rick Virtkitis pulled out to an early lead in the Modified feature Friday

Night at Penn Can Speedway. He battled with Harry Marvin in the early laps

of the event. During a restart on lap 7, Mike Colsten was able to take the

point away from Virkitis, while Virkitis fell able to third place.

George Konstalansky battled with Colsten for a few laps, however Virkitis

was able to make his way around the inside of Konstalansky on lap 13 while

Colsten pulled away from the feature field to win the Pine Line Auto Sale

feature. Virkitis held on for second followed by Konsalansky.

Rusty Harrington and Tommy McGurren had a good battle going, swapping

third and fourth positions. In the end it was Harrington over McGurren to

round out the top five in the modified field.

Before the start of the action on Friday evening, Penn Can Speedway

promoters Al Wilcox and Reed Miller placed a bounty on Dan Stone after he

has won six Late Model features in a row. The only stipulation on the

bounty was that Stone had to be running and on the lead lap at the end of

the race for the bounty to be claimed by the winner.

Stone started in seveth and it wasn=92t long for him to start moving up

through the field. Jim Sherman jumped out to an early lead with Dan=92s

brother, Jeremy hot on his heels. Eventually, Sherman pulled away from the

field. But in the late goings of the race, Gene Sharpsteen decided to make

his move. Sharpsteen made his way passed the inside of Jeremy and then on

the next lap, he made the same move on the inside of Sherman coming out of

turn four to take the lead with three laps to go. Dan Stone followed

Shaprsteen and he came within a bumper of beating him at the line on a

dramatic last lap side-by-side battle. Sharpsteen held on for the win,

with Stone second. Jeremy finished in third followed by Jim Sherman and

Billy Marvin.

In the Street Stock feature action, Tony Nalaschi took the lead on the

first lap. He was quickly over taken by Pete Gulick on lap 2 and Gulick

began to pull away from the field. By lap 12, Scott Conover was in second

and he began to hunt down Gulick. Within two laps, Conover was able to

snap a half a track deficit and battle Gulick for the lead. Coming off of

turn four, Conover and Gulick were side by side but Conover was able to

pull up and pass Gulick by a bumper at the line. This gave Conover the

advantage going into turns one and two. Going down the backstretch Gulick

was able get up along the inside of Conover, however going into turn three

Gulick went high, forcing Conover high as well. Gulick spun out and

Conover continued around the outside of his spinning car. The spin took

Gulick out of contention and Conover went on the win the Pine Line Auto

Sales feature. Rich Keehle broke out of his steak of sixth place finishes

to finish second followed by Glen Wilcox, Chris Hunsinger and Jamie Shea.

In Pure stock feature action, Daryl Ellis won his first win at Penn Can

Speedway. He led the entire race and second place finisher Ken Sparks was

not able to get around him. Chad Stone has yet to break through with a

feature win, but the Nerfbar, TN native is knocking on the door. Stone

finished third followed by newcomer Bob Boynton and Bill Hawkins.

The IMCA Feature was full of exciting racing action. Steve Hartman won=20

his second feature of the season at Penn Can Speedway. Mike Stoddard was

all over his rear bumper but couldn=92t surpass Hartman and he finished

second. Bob Chapman, Mike Smith and Randy Hall rounded out the top five.
