TIM FULLER TOPS THE CLASS AT BREWERTON
Race Date: July 25, 1997
BREWERTON, N.Y.. . . . Tim Fuller, Tom Horning, Frank Doll and Gary Morrisette Jr. were
tops in their class at the Brewerton Speedway on Team Haskins Oldsmobile-GMC Truck and Sav-On
Night at the D shaped dirt demon.
Tim Fuller captured his second race of the season at Brewerton and was challenged
throughout by Bob McCreadie. Fuller said, "This is the best my car has worked here this year.
I knew where Bob was and I know how he runs this track. I followed him around here enough last year."
Roger Phelps took the early lead from the pole position and paced the field through the
early going. Phelps, Fuller and McCreadie broke away from the pack. However, on the tenth lap
Scott Updyke spun and the restart proved to be the deciding point. Fuller grabbed the lead off the second turn and though challenged he went on for the victory.
Yellow fever kept the field tightly bunched as several spins and mechanical problems
forced several restarts down the stretch. At the halfway point it was Fuller and McCreadie
pulling away while Bill Gill was third tightly followed by Bill Decker, Pat Ward, Donnie Wetmore, Tim McCreadie, and Jimmy Phelps. Gill went to the pits with mechanical
problems in the late going. However, Fuller was able to stave off the threats from fellow
North Country runner, Bob McCreadie. Exiting the fourth turn on the final lap a slower car loomed in front of the leader. Fuller made the right move and went on for a
two-car length win over Bob McCreadie in the 35 lap feature event. Billy Decker came home for
third followed by Donnie Wetmore and Tim McCreadie. Completing the top ten were Bobby Varin, Ray Bliss, Roger Phelps, Shawn Donath and Jim Phelps.
A full field of 24 IMCA Modifieds were on hand for the main event and at the outset it
was Les Hubbard with the lead. However, on the third circuit Tom Horning took the low road
between the first and second turn to go to the point. Meanwhile, Glen Erwin and Neil Edgar were putting on a tremendous battle for second. The green stayed out for the
majority of the 20-lap event. Horning maintained the advantage while Edgar, Rob Keller and
Craig Simmons were in hot pursuit. At the checker Horning, Edgar, Keller, Simmons and Don Alvord completed the top five spots.
The four cylinder was a door-to-door, wheel-to-wheel battle that saw over a half dozen
cars dicing at the front of the field throughout the 15 lap main event. At the start George
Kirchoff set the pace, but on the second lap restart it was Tom Olin and Morrissette powering past. Joining the fray was Jill Klinkowsky, Ed Granoski, and Bob Haws. Five
cars broke away from the field by the halfway point as Olin, Morrissette, Klinkowsky,
Granoski and Haws were running under a blanket. Positions changed at just about every turn down the stretch. One lap later Morrissette took over, but he was never able
to breathe easily. At the finish it was Gary Morrissette with his second win of the year
while Haws lost a right rear wheel exiting the fourth turn allowing Ed Granoski to take the runner up spot. Haws settled for third followed by Bill Klinkowsky and Jim
