TIM BURNETT BECOMES 12TH DIFFERENT MODIFIED WINNER AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE,N.Y....7/11/97...Second generation driver Tim Burnett, out of Canandaigua,N.Y. became the 12th different winner in the Modified division at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night. In the Super-Stocks, Larry Knowles picked up his first win of the 1997 season. Another first time winner was Darren Hadley in the Pro-Stocks. Ralph Warren was declared the winner in the 4 Cyl. Stocks, after, Brian Austin was declared light at the post race weigh-in.

Tim Burnett became the 12th different winner in the Modifieds at the Black Rock Speedway, as Jeff Kappesser remains the only two time winner in the division. Burnette started the event in the 14th position, and worked his way quickly up through this talented field. When the green flag was waved, a traffic jam took place in the first turn. This mix up involved, Pat Golley,

Jeff Kappesser, Todd Milton and Chuck Kennison. On the re-start, Billy Borden had his 17B on the point, and he was being followed by Chris Lewis, and Stacy Jackson. Lap four saw Modified rookie Dave Machuga slid off the third turn, bringing out the yellow flag. On the re-start Chris Lewis got a bit out of shape and stacked up the field, sending Roy Shields spining to the infield.

When the race resumed, Stacy Jackson was the new leader, and Tim Burnett was in the runner up position. As the race progressed, Jackson and Burnett were battling wheel to wheel for the lead, as Paine Motorsports team mates Pat Golley and Jeff Kappesser were working their way back up through the field

from the first lap incident. On lap 14 Burnett took the lead and held off all challengers to take his first win of the season in the highly competitive 358 Modifieds. Finishing second after a great run was Pat Golley, third was Stacy Jackson, fourth after coming from dead last on the field was point leader, Jeff Kappesser, and rounding out the top five was,Lyle Sherwood, after a spirited drive late in the event. Heat wins went to, Chuck Kennison, Billy Borden, Fred Buckley, and Pat Golley.

In the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature, Charlie Donk was the winner, as he took the lead on lap six, and went on to score the popular win, veteran Don Lawson was second, third was Dylan DeWert, and the fourth and final qualifier was Buddy Morseman.

Larry Knowles, out of Painted Post,N.Y., picked up the popular win in the classy Super-Stocks last Friday at Black Rock on Tom Pratt Car Quest night. This was his first victory at the Yates County speed plant in 1997. He started the event in the 22nd position, and by lap 12 he was in the lead, and once out in front he began pulling away. At the checkers it was Knowles with

the victory, finishing second was third generation driver, Tony Harris, third was, Donnie Smith, fourth went to point leader, Dale Welty, and rounding out the top five was early leader Cam Sutherland. Heats went to, Rich Karlnoski, Dave Fultz, and Tony Harris. Donnie Smith was the consi winner.

Darren Hadley picked up his first win in the Pro-Stock division. He started on the pole and had to fend off many challenges, and avoid a lot of carnage in this wild affair before he could enjoy his victory. Ralph Champion was one of the first to challenge for the lead, but was one of many victims of on track incidents. Terry Wheat in the Wild 1, was also involved in an incident that saw him make heavy contact with Chris McCann in turn one. McCann was able to continue, Wheat left the event with a flat tire. After the smoke cleared from all of this action, the checkers finally flew as Hadley crossed the line with the win. Second went to Brian Knowles, third was, Eric VanSkiver, Ken Ham was fourth, and rounding out the top five was, Mike VanDyke, after an early race spin saw him go to the tail of the field. Heat wins went to, Steve Clark, and Brian Knowles.

Sometimes things are not always what they seem to be. Case in point, was the apparent winner in the 4 Cyl. Stocks last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. Brian Austin jumped out to the early lead and went on to blow the rest of the field into the weeds. He was the first across the line under Scott Lyons' checkered flag. Normally, this would be reason to celebrate. Not

so in this case. When Austin went across the scales, the green light did not come on, indicating that his car was the proper weight. His car weighed light, and he was disqualified. The win was given to second place finisher, Ralph Warren, second was, Phil Yaw, third was, Eddie Mills, fourth went to, Terry Cornish, and rounding out the top five was point leader, Tommy Stewart. Heat wins went to, Tom Stewart, and Shawn Brace.

Racing continues this Friday night, and it will be Mt. Dew T-Shirt night, as the great folks from the Elmira Pepsi-Cola Company will be sponsoring the nights racing action. It will be a regular show for all four divisions, and there will also be Hot Dog races in all classes. Gates open at 5:30, and racing gets started at 7:30, as the 40th year of racing continues at the Dundee oval. For more information, please call,(607)243-8686.
