DANNY JOHNSON WINS SYRACUSE QUALIFIER AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE,N.Y.....Danny Johnson won the Stewart P. Wilson Unocal 76 lap Prolong

Syracuse 358 Modified qualifier at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night.

Johnson already has a spot for Syracuse, so second place finisher, Todd Burley

will represent Black Rock in the 358 Prolong event at Syracuse. Dale Welty was

the winner in the Super-Stock division. Chris McCann picked up his second win

of the season in the Pro-Stocks. Tommy Stewart, out of Almond,N.Y. grabbed

another win in the 4 Cyl. Stocks.

Danny Johnson, out of Rochester,N.Y.,grabbed the big win in 76 lap Syracuse

Prolong 358 qualifier at the Black Rock Speedway. Johnson began this event in

the 20th position, and had battled his way up through the star studded field,

and took the lead on lap 54. At the drop of the green flag, outside pole

sitter, Stacy Jackson jumped out to the early lead. Lap 7 saw a lead change,

as a strong running Todd Milton got by Jackson, and began to pull away from

the rest of the field. While the high flying Milton was enjoying his lead in

front of the field, there was some great racing going on farther back in the

field. On lap 12 Danny Johnson was already up to 12th. A strong running Pat

Golley was having a fierce battle for second with Stacey Jackson. Former track

champion, Billy VanPelt was on the move and was up to seventh on lap 20. The

first yellow flag flew on lap 25 as Steve Hartman slid off the fourth turn.

Lap 33 saw Alan Johnson pull in the pits with a flat tire. He lost a lap in

the pits while the crew changed the tire. On lap 42 Johnson pulled in the

infield with a broken drive shaft. At the 50 lap mark, Todd Milton was still

sailing out in front of the field, he was followed by Pat Golley, Roy Shields,

Danny Johnson, Stacy Jackson, George Rushlow, Charlie Donk, Don Lawson, Billy

VanPelt, and Chuck Kennison. On lap 52 Danny Johnson found some bite in the

outside groove, and he was flying and had moved up to second place two laps

later he would get by Todd Milton and take the lead. Four laps later, Todd

Burley was in the third position, after starting 19th. On the next circuit,

Burley moved into the second position, and began to challenge Johnson for

the lead. The remaining laps of this race kept the capacity crowd on their

feet and cheering. Johnson was now hugging the bottom of the speedway, and

Burley was broadsliding the cushion. Lap 70 saw the leaders in heavy lapped

traffic, which worked to Johnson's advantage, as he was able to hold off

Burley for the win. Burley finished second, third was Charlie Donk, fourth

went to, early leader, Todd Milton, and rounding out the top five was Tim

Burnette. Heat wins went to,Ron White, Stacy Jackson, Billy VanPelt, and Roy

Shields.

In the Big Flats Manufactured housing feature Jeff Kappesser jumped out to

the early lead and held on for the win. John Moravec finished second in the

Loren Lincoln #21, third went to Modified rookie, Dave Machuga, the fourth and

final qualifying spot went to "Jungle" Jim Schuyler.

In Super-Stock racing action, Dale Welty returned to his winning ways, as he

copped the feature event in this classy division. He began the event in the

10th starting position, and by lap six he was in the lead. There was some

great racing going on behind him, as Donnie Smith Jr. in the S.P. Wilson 76,

Dave Fultz and Rich Karlnoski battled for second through fourth. But, on this

night the Spencer's Big M 1-2-3 was running to perfection, and ran away from

the rest of field to record his fifth win of the season, and increase his

point lead over Earl Harp who finished 11th. Second place went to, Donnie

Smith Jr., third was Dave Fultz, fourth went to, Rich Karlnoski, and Larry

Knowles rounded out the top five. Heats went to, Dale Welty, Rich Karlnoski,

and Donnie Smith. The consi was won by, Earl Harp.

Chris McCann is having a great year in his rookie season in the Pro-Stock

division. The graduate from the 4 Cyl Stocks picked up his second win of the

season on the 4th of July. Outside pole sitter, Jeff Baroody jumped out to the

early lead. On the next lap another rookie in the division, Jason Clugstone

took over the top spot. Then these two rookies put on a driving school at the

front of the field, as they broke away from the pack and had a race of their

own. McCann took over the number one spot on lap 9 coming out of turn three,

and he then began to pull away from the rest of the field. There was still

some good racing going on for second through fifth between, Jason Clugstone,

Steve Brace, Steve Clark, and Ralph Champion. On the 19th lap Steve Clark's

race came to an abrupt end as the motor in the 21 came un-glued dumping it's

contents in the first turn. Steve Brace became a victim of this oil spill and

spun his mount, and had to go to the rear of the field with one lap to go! At

the checkers it was Chris McCann scoring the popular victory, the "Junkyard

Dog", Ralph Champion, got the runner-up spot, third was,Jason Clugstone,

fourth went to, Brian Hilliard, and rounding out the top five was, Jeff

Baroody. Heats went to, Jeff Baroody, and Chris McCann.

Tommy Stewart, out of Almond,N.Y., picked up yet another win in the 4

Cylinder Stock division, as he beat out Terry Cornish by about a foot in a

drag race down the front straight. There was a scarey moment in this event, as

the #56 of "Mudslide" Bob Stewart stalled on the front straight near the

starter's stand and was hit hard by the 28 of Todd Stone. Both Cars were

heavily damaged, but the drivers were uninjured. Finishing second to Tommy

Stewart was Terry Cornish, third was Ralph Warren, fourth was, Phil Yaw, and

rounding out the top five was Joel Husted. Heats were taken by, Ralph Warren,

Tom Stewart, and Terry Cornish.
