SCOTT DRAKE MAKES STREET STOCK FIFTY LAP SPECIAL HIS FIRST CAREER WIN
The Street Stocks were the highlighted division at Woodhull Raceway Saturday night with a special five lap, $1000.00 to win feature, and Lindley, N.Y. pilot Scott Drake stepped out form his second row starting spot to lead all fi laps, and record his first ever feature victory . 1996 Modified Champion, Steve Coots of Bath topped a stellar field of Small Block Modifieds, and Rich Marlatt of Canisteo, N.Y. took over with o laps to go in the amateur feature to lead the way to the checkered flag. "The Risingville Rocket", Eddie Mills, earned the win in a wild Four Cylinder Stock feature.
Thirty of the classy Street Stocks filled the pits for the special long distance event, and the twenty-four car feature field was the cream of the crop. Ted Brewer's Thunderbird brought the pack to the green flag, and a three wide battle for the lead immediately developed in turn one. Drake had his Chevy Berretta out front as the group hit the stripe to complete lap one, and set a torrid pace for the remaining four -nine laps. The rest of the class stayed close throughout the event, but Drake used a smooth, no mistakes line at the bottom groove to keep his challengers at bay. Larry Robbins in the #X car kept the pressure on from second, and near the mid-point, the pair of leaders put on a wild side by side battle that lasted for six or seven laps, but Robbins was unable to complete the pass. while this action was going on, Scott Brown, who was the 1996 Street Stock Rookie of the Year, calmly worked his way from his seventeenth place starting spot to run in the top five. As the laps wound down, the top five cars closed up into a tight group, but Drake kept his smooth, steady line, and got to the finish line first. Robbins held on for second over Scott Brown, with Ken Peoples putting his Chevy pickup into fourth. Bill Brewer rounded out the top five.
Thirty Small Block Modifieds made the haul to Woodhull Saturday night, with "Fast Freddie" bringing the field to the feature green. Steve "The Canaserega Comet"Mullen led the first five circuits, but eighth place starter Don Lawson was on the move and brought his Woodhull based Troyer to the front, leading the next five laps. On the ninth lap, Steve Coots slipped by second place runner Billy Van Pelt, and on the eleventh lap, the "Concrete Coupe" drove around Lawson to take the lead. Lawson stayed close to record a runner-up finish, with Van Pelt holding third over Herbic Wright, and the Ford powered machine of Ray McClure.
P.J. Devinny rolled away from his outside pole starting berth to lead the first eight laps of the amateur feature, and the Addison pilot joined with Pennsylvania driver Bob Clark to put some distance on the rest of the pack. Contact between a pair of lap cars, just as the leaders were attempting a pass, entangled P.J., and Devinny spun to the infield with only three wheels remaining on the car. Clark took over the top spot on the restart and set the pace over the next nine laps. Rich Marlatt took over the runner-up position on the thirteenth circuit, and began to pressure the leader, at times pulling alongside, but not quite able to complete the pass. As the pair charged down the back straight, heading for the to go signal, Marlatt gained the advantage, and went on for the win. Clark hung on for second, with Tim Schaeffer third, Bud Gee fourth, and Rich Curreri fifth.
The Four Cylinder Stock feature was again one of the best races of the evening as the buzz bombs ran their fifteen lap feature with an intense multi-car battle for the lead. Bill Shay led the first three circuits, giving up the lead to "Flyin' Brian" Grant in his Ford Ranger pickup. Shay battled back to retake the point o laps later, but on the ninth lap, Ed Mills made a high side move to step into the lead started side by side in the sixth row, and came through the pack together to join the leaders, and over the last four laps the battle for the top five was intense, with three abreast racing the norm. Mills held on for the exciting win, with Shay barely getting second over Goodier. Stewart and Don Potter rounded out the top five.
