HEARN HAULS OFF WITH THIRD WIN OF '97
WEST LEBANON, NY - Brett Hearn won his third modified
feature at Lebanon Valley Speedway Saturday night.
George Marcus continued to rewrite the history books as
he won his fourth consecutive sportsman feature.
Craig Boehler took the lead at the drop of the
green flag for the 30-lap modified feature. The caution
came out before one lap could be completed as several
cars in the front of the pack came together. Hearn took
the third position on lap two, he would claim second
place on the same lap. Hearn would then set his sights
on the 50J, of Boehler. Billy Decker and Rich Ricci
would be up to fifth and sixth respectively by lap
three.
Hearn would catch Boehler and pass him for the lead
on the fourth lap. Meanwhile Maynard Forrette and Chris
Moore would battle for third. Decker would take fourth
on lap five. Boehler, Moore and Forrette would go three
wide in the race for the second spot on lap nine. Kenny
Tremont was up to eighth by lap nine after starting
22nd. Ricci would grab fourth on lap 10.
Meanwhile Hearn pulled out to a full straightaway
advantage over Moore. Donnie Corellis had a good run
going, he was fifth by lap 12. Tremont moved up to sixth
by lap 13, but would not advance any more positions the
remainder of the feature. At the halfway point it was
Hearn, Moore Decker, Ricci and Corellis.
The only battle toward the front of the pack was
for the seventh spot as Dickie Larkin passed Boehler for
the seventh position. Deckerwould try to grab second
from Moore an the 20th circuit, but could not make the
move stick. The second yellow of the race came out on
lap 22 for the 50J of Boehler. This would allow Moore
and the others to catch up to Hearn.
Hearn's Budweiser #3 was strong to the task as he
easily pulled away on the restart. A good run for Don
Ackner, he was up to tenth by the 24th lap after
starting last. Hearn continued to pull out an advantage
and crossed the finish line well ahead of the rest of
the feild. Moore would finish second, Decker third,
Ricci fourth and Donnie Corellis came home fifth.
HEAT WINNERS: BOEHLER, DECKER, HEFNER
SPORTSMAN FEATURE: George Marcus continues to tear up
the competition in the sportsman division. He won his
fourth victory in a row on Saturday night. Marcus
continues to break his own record. Last week he set the
record with three wins in a row. This week he broke that
record with win number four.
Butch McWhirt was the early race leader with Art
Collins second. Bobby Chalmers would grab second on lap
one. The yellow flag flew on lap five for the first
time. Marcus would take the fifth spot on the restart.
Two yellows on lap six grouped the feild back together
again. Collins and Chalmers would go side to side for
the second spot on lap seven. Marcus was up to fourth
on lap eight when the yellow flag came out again.
Marcus would grab second on the restart and would
take the lead going into turn four on that ssame lap.
Bobby Hackel, who is the only other driver to win this
season in the sportsman division, was up to third and
would take second on lap eleven. Hackel and McWhirt
would battle for second while Marcus ran away from the
feild. A caution on lap 12 allowed the feild to catch up
to the #91M of Marcus.
Hackel would suffer a right front flat on the
restart, ending his chance for victory. Chris Kokosa
would inherit the second spot, with Jeff Cassidy third.
Marcus would cruise home with the victory a half
straightaway ahead of Kokosa, who finished second,
Cassidy was third, Roy Bridge was fourth and Ed Riiska
rounded out the top five.
STREET STOCK FEATURE: The street stocks put on quite a
show for the fans in their 20-lap feature. Robbie Speed
was the early race leader. Dave Streibel and Lorne Browe
battled for the fourth spot on lap three. A caution for
an incident in turn two brought out the yellow on lap
four. One of the cars involved was the #54L of Jim
Langenback. By the seventh lap Robbie Speed had the #14
of Lorne Browe on his back bumper. Browe would take the
lead going into turn three. Speed tried to pass Browe
back in turn four, but lost control and spun.
Browe would open up on the pack, while Langenback
charged from the rear. Browe's night came to a halt as
he suffered a flat tire, this would give the lead to
Rich Crane. As the leaders hit lapped traffic, Danny
Sanchez was able to get by Crane with Langenback taking
over second. Langenback would try to get by Sanchez as
the two raced side by side on the final lap. Sanchez was
strong to the task as he came home the winner. This was
a Rolling Wheels Raceway World Series of Dirt Qualifier,
which Sanchez is now guaranteed a spot.
The IMCA modified feature was won by Rich Colesanti
from Poughqauq.
