Cherry Benefits From McKee Flat At Orange County
Middletown, NY. With three laps to go in the Kensington Manor 30 lap modified feature, Chuck McKee suffered a right rear flat tire which allowed Bill Cherry of New Windsor, NY to inherit the lead at the Orange County Fair Speedway. Cherry, aboard his Asphalt Pavements #44 Teo-Pro car, then ran out front the rest of the way to record his 8th career big block victory Saturday night and the first of 1997. Finishing second was 1996 Sportsman champion, Tim Hindley. Third went to Donnie Wilson in the Dick Humphrey’s owned #18 small block modified, Joe Winne and Frank Jashembowski completed the top five.
In the caution filled 15 lap DIRT Sportsman feature, Lem Atkins of New Peitz, NY out ran Jimmy Johnson to collect his first win ever at Orange County. First year driver Rich Fenical was third. Fourth went to Greg Sleight who started 27th in the 28 car field and Eric Arell was 5th.
Tom Cannizzaro of Stone Ridge, NY was the winner of the 12 lap Novice Street Stock feature as the defending class champion has now won twice in the first three weeks aboard his new 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. The 10 lap Rookie class feature was taken by Mike Pomarico of Beacon, NY.
The Kensington Manor Modified Dash For Cash was claimed by Chuck McKee of Middletown over Tim Hindley Rich Eurich and Joe Winne.
For the first time since the mid sixties, there was no small block modified program as that class has been put on a restricted 10 race program for 1997.
