Bill Tittle, Les Streeter, and Gary Smith Win on Fair Night
The Afton Fair crowd packed the grandstand and was thrilled at Bill Tittle edged out Jamie Paige in a photo finish for the win in the 358 Modified- Sportsman at Afton Raceway Park last Friday night. Tittle became the seventh winner in as many events this season, while Paige settled for his third runner up finish of the year. Les Streeter picked up his second win of the year in the Street Stocks, edging out Denny Smith after a side-by-side, back and forth battle for the lead. In the Four Cylinder Street Stocks Gary Smith made it three in a row with the win over Rich Watson and Jake Slack.
Tony Wrench jumped out to the early lead in the Modified feature. Scott Landers got the jump on a lap 4 restart from the outside to take the lead. Wrench regained the lead from the outside groove on the next lap restart with Bill Tittle moving into the third spot. Another caution came out on lap 6 when Wrench spun out in turn 2 in front of the field putting Landers in front with Bill Tittle in second, J.R. Hurlburt third, Darrin Schuler fourth, and Howard Singer fifth.
The race was red flagged on the 7th lap when Alan Latwinski rode the front stretch wall, taking out a catch fence pole in the process. The race was restarted and Landers and Tittle raced for the lead until Landers spun out in turn 2 putting the Bulldog Express in front, with Howard Singer second, Darrin Schuler third, Mike Clapperton fourth and Earl Walrath fifth.
Howard Singer pulled his M26 Sportsman into the lead on lap 10. A lap 12 incident sent Tony Wrench spinning and Darrin Schuler to the rear. On lap 13 Scott Landers and Howard Singer tangled sending both cars to the rear and putting Mike Clapperton in the lead. His lead was short-lived as a soft right rear tire allowed Bill Tittle to take the lead with Jamie Paige hot on his tail and Ron Ford running third. The fight for the lead was on and Paige closed in on Tittle and the two cars crossed the line side-by-side with Tittle taking the win by feet. Ron Ford took third, Tony Wrench had his best finish in fourth and Mike Clapperton crossed the line fifth.
Les Streeter picked up his second win of the year holding off the hard charging Denny Smith. The 04 of Smith jumped out to the early lead until Marty Goodwin made the pass on lap 3. By the fifth lap Streeter had moved into second. The 57J went high in turn 3 allowing Gary Roberts and Al MacRabie to begin to run for the lead. Roberts had moved into second when he spun out on lap 9. MacRabie had moved up to challenge Goodwin for the lead when the two hooked bumpers on the tenth lap in turn four.
This left Denny Smith and Les Streeter to battle for the lead. They ran side-by-side for two laps with neither driver able to gain an advantage. Streeter finally got the edge and moved into the lead. Mike Buchek and Gary Card had moved up to run for the lead. Card was able to get by Buchek to take third with Jim Giles crossing the line fifth.
Gary Smith threaded his way through the pack to take his third consecutive Four Cylinder Street Stocks feature win. Rich Watson and Jake Slack followed him through the field and across the line for second and third. Paul Miller finished fourth and Rick Lashway took fifth.
