Mike Clapperton, Gary Card, Rich Watson and Bill Izyk Win at ARP

Under clear blue skies Mike Clapperton, Gary Card, Rich Watson and Bill Izyk all picked up feature wins on Country Store's Night at Afton Raceway Park.

Bob Savoie made his first appearance at ARP and seemed to have the field covered as he threaded his way through traffic and passed Chuck Kennison for the lead. The two battled into lapped traffic until a caution came out and Mike Clapperton entered the field in third position.

It was the lapped traffic that came into play setting up Clapperton's second win of the season. Between turns 3 and 4 Savoie and Kennison came upon the lapped car of Brian Winkler. Savoie tapped the rear of Winkler's car sending him high into turn 4. Kennison had anticipated the lapped traffic but not the cars moving into the outside groove. His high groove became blocked when the two cars went high. Winkler came back down to the low groove coming out of turn 4. Clapperton had dropped down to the hub, made incidental contact with Winkler and was the first car past the flagger to take the lead. Savoie then developed handling problems on the restart and Kennison was able to pull the 9X into second, Savoie came home third. A strong running Joe Sellars took fourth and Jeff Rudalavage took fifth.

The key to Gary Card's third feature win in the Street Stock division came when Gary Roberts pitted while leading on the 13th lap. Charging to the front from his eighth starting position Roberts passed Tim French in the second turn on lap 6 to take over the top spot. Meanwhile Gary Card was threading his way through traffic and by the 10th lap had moved into second after starting sixteenth. Card inherited the lead on the 13th lap when Roberts took the U2 into the pits due to mechanical problems. Tim French's spin in turn two put Mike Buchek into second, Jerry Northrup third, Chris Cacialli fourth, and Denny Smith fifth, and that's how they crossed the line at the finish.

Rich Watson thoroughly dominated the four cylinder Street Stock feature leading flag to flag for his second win of the season. Jake Slack ran to the front but was unable to catch the flying Aries and settled for third spot extending his point lead over fourth place finisher Gary Smith. Randy Brokaw drove the number 17 home third passing Smith on the last lap. Jeff Lee rounded out the top 5. The Mini Sprint feature went to Bill Izyk but the show was for second with Jerry Henderberg, Jim Denoyer and Paul Bouler swapping spots back and forth lap after lap. Hank Katz brought the number 40 home in fifth.
