HAERS TAKES FIRST BIG BLOCK WIN AT CCFS
WEEDSPORT, NY...Just Haers won one other time at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway, located in Weedsport, NY, July 21, 2002. That victory came aboard a small block car. Sunday's first win of the year was aborad a big block car. Picking up top honors for the second time this year in the sportsman division was Eric Richardson. A very destructive Street Stock main saw only three cars running at the finish with Dan Hoffman picking up the checkers. Glenn Quinn became a first time winner in the Enduros, while Cory Sparks, from Scotia, NY, earned the 15-lap victory in the special Central NY Mini-Sprint A-Main.
A hard blacken surface greeted the race teams following a weekend of motorcycle races at the fast three eighths mile oval. Justin Haers parleyed this unusual track surface into his advantage taking the lead at the drop of the green from his outside pole starting spot.
As the first lap was being recorded into the record books the yellow flew for Jimmy Burke who had spun out in the third turn. A second lap yellow for debris also flew forcing the field to try to restart the race again.
Haers was able to hold off Chuck Bower on the restart. Following a yellow on lap four when John Pfeffer spun in turn three, Haers started to stretch out a two second lead over Bower. Jeff Brownell Jr. ran third followed by Ray Bliss and Ryan Phelps.
Haers continued to build his lead with the field starting to be lapped. On lap 23 the yellow flew when Burke again came to a stop on the track, this time in the second turn.
Haers out dragged Bower again and went on to build a margin of safety. At the finish line it was Haers with the popular win by some 2.476 seconds over Bower, for an average race speed of 67.053 mph. Gary Tomkins, who blew by four others on the final restart came home in third followed by Brownell Jr. and Pat Ward.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw young John Juhl II take the lead. As he exited the fourth turn on the second lap his car became extremely loose as it wiggled on the track. This was enough for Jason Potter to take the lead.
On lap nine the yellow flew when Juhl II suffered a flat tire and could not make the turn into the pit area. On the restart Eric Richardson began to pressure Potter on the high side down the back stretch. On lap 11 he ran side-by-side with Potter for the lead, completing the pass one lap later. This made him the third different leader on the event.
Richardson eventually came home 1.9 seconds ahead of Potter for the win. Tom Juhl, Mike Conrow and Donnie Wetmore Jr. rounded out the top five finishers.
The 15-lap Street Stock main saw only nine cars answer the starter's call. Dan Hoffman Sr immediately took the lead at the start of the feature. Some four yellows later only three cars were remaining on the track to complete the feature. Hoffman took the win followed by Dave Marcuccilli, Eric Chapman, John Protrovich and Mike Minutolo in the top five paying positions.
The Central NY Mini-Sprint feature was race number six in a nineteen race series. Jared Fink took the lead at the drop of the green and set about to develop a solid advantage over series points leader Cory Sparks. Sparks would have none of that and began to close the gap drastically on Hoffman. On lap seven he dove low in the third turn and took the lead from Fink.
Running in third was Jamie Kiser, from Whitesboro, NY. Kiser's great run ended under yellow when the chain on his engine fell onto the track. All Kiser could do is the drift slowly around the track.
When the checkers flew it was Sparks maintaining his points advantage with a win. Jared Fink, James Tomlinson, Pat Kuerner, and Canandaigua feature winner from the night before, Rick Hench to round out the top five finishers.
Jeremy Quick, from Kerhonkson, NY, flipped his mini-sprint in the first heat race. So many mini-sprints dropped from that heat race only four remained on the track at the checkers.
This Sunday a special non-points show for the DIRT Modifieds and Sportsman. Both of these divisions have series races at other tracks. At Cayuga County the first 358-modified across the finish line earns a guaranteed starting spot in Syracuse's 358-modified main come October. Race time will begin promptly at 7 p.m..
