Scott Cole Memorial Night 8/4/2006

Redline Raceway after having a week off for the Troy Fair, opened its gates for another great night of racing action. With just a handful of racing weeks left the drivers tried real hard to gather every possible championship point that they could. This proved to make for some real intense racing action throughout the evening.

The evening started with a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, sung by Hanna Smith from Arkport, NY. She is the daughter of Mike Smith, driver of the 96 I.M.C.A. Sunoco modified.

The Mini Stocks kicked off the show with their qualifying heats. Heat winners were Travis Parks, of Troy, Pa., and Larry Colton from Columbia Cross Roads, Pa. Modified heat wins went to, Brian Malcolm, Brent Boyer, and Shawn Reimert. The I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified qualifying heats victories went to Josh Sawyer and Rich Talada. Joe Reeves took the Street Stock heat win. The Pure Stock heats wins went to Ernie Martin and Terry Potrzebowski.

After the qualifying heat finished, the drivers brought their cars up to the spectator area for an autograph session. Redline would like to thank all the drivers who participated .

When the cars returned to the pits there was a short ceremony held. The night was dedicated in loving memory to Scott L. Cole. 31 balloons were released as Cole would have turned 31 this week. A short speech was read and a moment of silence was observed. Mr. And Mrs. Harold Cole, Scott Cole's parents, presented the trophies to the feature winners.

All of the feature fields were led by the Redline Raceway "POP's Pace Truck, and in tow was the Gater Racing News pace vehicle. Redline would like to thank Joe Patrick and his gang for coming out to Redline for Scott Cole Memorial night. Gater Racing News also gave out some great door prizes including 2 tickets to the Busch Series event at Watkins Glen this Sunday.

The Mini Stocks started the feature action as they rumbled onto the raceway. Shane Hickok and Natasha Robinson led the field to the green. Before one lap could be completed almost half the field was collected in an altercation on the backstretch. The following restart saw the Hickok machine take the lead and he lead the first lap. Hickok tried to hold off Doug Colton on lap 2 but Colton was strong and moved inside Hickok to take the lead. Larry Colton moved to second also on lap 2 and started to run down the younger Colton. Larry Colton on lap 7 slid to the inside of Doug Colton to take the top position. Caution would wave over the field on lap 9 for the David Kinner machine, as he lost the handle off turn number 4. Kinner suffered a left rear flat and retired to the pits. Larry Colton still leading had to slow for another caution on lap 13 as the Mike Navone machine fell off the pace in corner 4. The ensuing restart saw the Colton machine lead the field with Jay Cummings and Natasha Robinson in tow. Lap 13 the 47 of Clyde Gardner from Roaring Branch, Pa., moved to the inside of Robinson to take away the 3rd spot. The Gardner machine loses the handle off turn 2 and the Stan Matthews machine took away that 3rd spot from Gardner. One more caution flew over the Mini Stock feature field as Natasha Robinson lost the handle off turn 2 and made hard contact with Jay Vannoy. The race was red flagged as Vannoy was treated by the Western Alliance Ambulance crew. Vannoy was not seriously injured and the race resumed. Colton led the field to the green once again, and crossed the stripe for the win, Jay Cummings took second, and Clyde Gardner rounded out the top three.

The Big Block Small Block Modifieds were on deck next. Bob Silvernail from Gillette, Pa., and Shawn Reimert of Oley, Pa., made up the front row and led the field to the green. Before a lap was completed the Lucas Schroth machine from Elmira, NY., and the Danny West modfiied of Montour Falls, NY., tangled in turn one and the first of many cautions flew over the field. The field took the green on the restart only to have the 2nd caution wave over the field for Tim Guild of Woodhull, NY., Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel, Pa., and Brent Boyer, hailing from Bloomsburg, Pa., having an altercation in turn one. The field took the green again and on lap 2 Reimert moved to the outside of Bob Silvernail off turn 3 and took over the top spot. Meanwhile Mike Schane from Lake Ariel, Pa., was moving up through the field as he moved to the outside of Ray Dann on lap 4 for the 4th running position. Several more cautions slowed the field throughout the feature but the action heated up at the front of the pack by lap 16. Mike Schane worked to the outside of the Harris machine off turn 2 and Schane moved into the 2nd running position moving Harris back to 3rd. Reimert still leading on lap 19 Don Silvernail from Gillette, Pa., slid under the Harris machine to overtake the third position. Meanwhile Schane was putting all kinds of pressure on Reimert for the lead. Lap 20 Schane worked hard to the outside of Reimert off corner 2 and Schane took away the top position. Surviving 11 cautions Schane went on to take the checkers, Reimert crossing the stripe in second and Silvernail with a good strong finish rounded out the top three.

Next up were the Nationally Sanctioned I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds. Don Buchanan from Lawman, NY., and Josh Sawyer of Lindley, NY., led the field to the green. Sawyer led the first circuit around with the Smith machine jumping to 2nd by lap 2. Smith started to reel in the young Sawyer machine and on lap 7 Smith moved to the inside of Sawyer to take the lead off turn 4. Only one caution slowed the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified feature field. Lap 14 Josh Sawyer and Rich Talada tangled in turn 4. The ensuing restart saw Smith as the leader Sean Lias second and newcomer K.C. Cole of Conklin, NY., rounding out the top three.
Smith went on to take the win with Lias and Cole crossing the stripe in second and third.

The Street Stocks took to the red clay racing oval next. Joe Reeves and Eric Matthews made up the front row and led the field to the green. Reeves jumped out to the front and led the first lap. Eddie Sites and Al Silvernail made contact down the front stretch and Silvernail spins in turn 1. Sites of Monroeton, Pa., and Ed McKernan, from Towanda, Pa., battled hard in turn 3 and 4 on lap 4. Sites edges ahead of McKrenan for the third spot. Reeves fell off the pace on lap 7 and retired to the pits. Eric Matthews from Trout Run, Pa., inherited the lead. Matthews being the leader outruns the Sites machine and leads lap 8. Sites and McKernan continued to battle hard for 2nd place on lap 11 . Sites and McKernan still neck and neck off turn 4 on lap 14. The closing laps saw Matthews out in front and Dale Baldwin fromColumbia, Cross Roads, Pa., and Sites battling for second. Eric Matthews took his second feature victory of the season with Sites crossing second and Baldwin finishing third.

Last but certainly not least were the Pure Stocks. Bobby Maynard of Towanda, Pa., and Reggie Hall from Ulster, Pa., led the Pure Stock feature field to the green. Ernie Martin of Troy, Pa., jumped to the lead as he worked to the inside of Maynard down the backstretch, Martin led the first lap. The veteran Terry Potrzebowski from Elmira, NY., moved to the inside of Maynard off turn 4 for the second spot. Caution waved over the field for Gene Sharpsteen from Waverly, NY., who came to a rest in turn 4. Martin retook the lead on the ensuing restart coming off turn 2. Caution for debris and the Shannon Oswald machine from Mt. Lake Pa., as Oswald came to a stop on the front stretch. Terry Potrzebowski fought his way around Martin to take over the top postion and led the 7th lap. Back in the pack a good battle between Nick Robinson and Josh Parker waged on. Parker on lap 10 worked hard to overtake Robinson for that third postion, dropping Robinson to 4th. Potrzebowski went on to take the win with Ernie Martin placing second and Josh Parker crossing in third.
