DANNY ERB WINS MODIFIED FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW DESPITE FLAT TIRE
RON KLINE WON HIS THIRD LATE MODEL FEATURE OF THE SEASON
BECHTELSVILLE, PA June 26, 2005 . . . Even a flat tire could not keep veteran stock car racer Danny Erb from wheeling the Systems Service/Gold Rush Trailers #44 Modified to his first career victory on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway winning the 30-lap Zuber Realty NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature race. Ron Kline was able to grab his third win of the season topping the 24 car starting field in the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature race.
The first five laps of the NASCAR Modified feature was lead by Danny’s brother Donny Erb with Danny getting the lead on the 6th circuit of the one-third-mile banked clay oval. Once in front the Boyertown racer held off constant challenges from former champions Terry Meitzler and Ray Swinehart along with Jon Kellner.
With just three laps to go Brian Kressley brought out the caution for a spin in the second turn and that set up a five car chase for the checkered flag with Danny Erb leading the way. Despite a flat right front tire that developed on the restart and Swinehart giving him a little nudge to let him know he was there, Erb was able to hold on to the top spot on the final three laps to win and pick up the $2,200 first place money.
In victory lane a jubilant Erb talked about his dad, Mike Erb, who was a top racer at Grandview years back and is a former track champion. His dad works with him as part of the race team. “ He did all that he did with less than the best equipment. We have the kind of equipment that should be in victory lane and I am really happy to be here,” said the victorious racer.
Second spot went to two time past champion Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) while another former champion in Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) was able to come home third. Jon Kellner (Lansdale), a two time feature winner already this season, grabbed a fourth and Ryan Watt (Pheonixville) came home with a strong fifth place effort.
Current point leader Jeff Strunk, who started 15th, had to settle for 10th in a night that saw few cautions on the hard and slick track.
Danny’s brother Donny, who had lead early, finished 26th after having a right rear tire go flat putting him out of action.
The 20-lap feature for Late Models saw Buddy Wharton (Reading) putting on quite a show for the first ten laps and looking as if he just might be able to get his first career win. Ron Kline (Green Lane) came from eighth to the front on the 11th lap and then rode to an easy win with a straightaway lead on the field at the finish.
The win was the third of the season for Kline with the Tom Oates Chevy sponsored entry. Second place went to Wharton, his best effort of the season and perhaps of his career. Sean Michael (Gilbertsville) finished third after challenging for the lead a couple of times. Chuck Schutz (Pottstown), the defending Late Model champion, came home fourth followed by high schooler Mike Kellner (Lansdale).
More than 80 cars were on hand for the 16 events of racing which were completed in just three hours and 10 minutes.
Qualifying heat wins in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds went to Jon Kellner, Meme DeSantis, Keith Brightbill, Kerry Kratz and Terry Meitzler. The consolation victories were earned by Kyle Weiss, Bobby Trapper and Tom Umbenhour. The Cheers Tavern Cash Dash went to Jon Kellner.
In Late Model qualifiers victories were earned by Sean Merkel, Randy Stoudt and Chuck Schutz. The consolation win went to lady racer Kelly Snyder while the Jim Brown Cash Dash was won by Randy Stoudt.
The always exciting Late Model stock cars will be featured on Saturday, July 2nd, when the Firecracker 40 Late Model Championship is presented along with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds. And topping off the 4th of July weekend show will be a spectacular FIREWORKS show.
