ALAN JOHNSON PASSES BOB McCREADIE ON FINAL LAP TO CLAIM WIN AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY ON AVON PRODUCTS/BURDICK DODGE NIGHT
BREWERTON, NY…Alan Johnson passed Bob McCreadie on the final turn of the last circuit to claim the 35-lap DIRT Big Block Modified feature win at Brewerton Speedway last Friday on Avon Products/Burdick Dodge/Syracuse Crunch Night. The victory for Johnson was his sixth of the season at D-shaped DIRT Demon in the Elaine James DIRT Modified. The victory was worth $1,700.
Tony Buffa raced out to the early lead at the start of the Avon Products/Burdick Dodge/Syracuse Crunch DIRT Modified feature from the pole starting position. Buffa led the opening three circuits before Bob McCreadie took over the top spot on lap four. With five laps complete McCreadie continued to lead and was being followed in the top five by Jimmy Phelps, Pat Ward, Tony Buffa and Tim Fuller.
Several minor caution periods slowed the pace throughout the race. At the halfway point of the main event Bob McCreadie continued to lead the way with Scott Prentice, Johnson, Fuller and Billy Decker following in the top five. Chuck Bower, Buffa, Ward, Chuck Hebing and Frankie Caprara raced in positions sixth through tenth at the halfway mark.
On several occasions Prentice looked to move past McCreadie. The lead never changed hands, while Prentice was forced to the pits on lap 31 with front-end damage. Johnson inherited second place at this time. McCreadie continued to hold off Johnson, as it appeared that the multi-time Brewerton Track Champion would claim his first victory of the season.
On the final turn of the last lap, Johnson was able to sneak under McCreadie and he won the drag race to the finish line for the victory. Bob McCreadie had to settle for second, his best finish of the season. Fuller, Bower and Ward completed the top five feature finishers. Decker, Tim McCreadie, Buffa, Steve Hulsizer and Caprara finished in positions sixth through tenth respectively.
Billy Dunn claimed the win in the rain delayed IMCA Modified feature from August 16. It was Dunn’s second win of the season. Joe Reeves, Joe Price, Bill Anderson Jr. and Richard Townsend completed the top five feature finishers behind Dunn. Dunn inherited the lead from Sean Lias on lap 17 when Lias stopped on the track with mechanical problems.
Sean Lias came back to win the nightcap IMCA Modified feature. It was the eighth win of the season for Lias. Billy Dunn, Bill Anderson Sr., Tony Finch and George Valenti followed Lias across the finish line. Lias took the lead away from Pat Pontello on lap four and led the rest of the distance in the 20-lap affair.
Bob Garafolo claimed the victory in the 20-lap Dwarf Car feature race. Matt Magner, Darren Forbes, Mark Cooper and Lowell Zehr followed Garafolo across the finish line. Garafolo took the top spot away from Scot Nash on lap 12 and led the rest of the way in the 20-lap event. It was Garafolo’s first career victory.
Bob Doolittle was the feature race winner in the rain delayed Four Cylinder Stock feature from August 16. Doolittle was victorious in his first appearance of the season. Chuck Powelczyk, Roger West, Harvey Calkins Jr. and Walt Van Epps completed the top five finishers behind Doolittle. Doolittle took the lead away from Lorrie Hebert on lap four and led the rest of the distance in the 15-lap affair.
Doolittle also claimed the feature win in the second Four Cylinder Stock feature of the evening. Jeff Herbert, Chuck Powelczyk, Chris Smith and Tim Koch completed the top five feature finishers in the second event. Doolittle passed Herbert on the final circuit for the victory in the 15-lap event.
Mitch Pietrowicz was the winner in the Four Cylinder Enduro feature. Rich Gardner, Chad Guthrie, Buddy Grant and Brian Wilbur completed the top five feature finishers behind Pietrowicz.
Racing will continue this Friday at Brewerton Speedway with the DIRT Big Block Modifieds and Dwarf Cars competing in double features. The IMCA Modifieds and Four Cylinder Stocks will battle in a weekly race program. One On One Spectator Races and Ladies Races will also be contested. Regular admission prices will be in effect with race time set for 7:30 p.m. For more information please contact the track office at (315) 668-6906 or go on line at www.brewertonspeedway.com.
