ALAN JOHNSON HOLDS OFF DECKER IN CLASSIC SHOOT-OUT ON NGK SPARK PLUGS NIGHT

BREWERTON, NY…Alan Johnson held off the late race challenge of Billy Decker to win the 35 lap DIRT Modified feature at Brewerton Speedway last Friday on NGK Spark Plugs Night. The pair battled in and out of lapped traffic in the late going, but Johnson held on for his third win of 2001 at the D-shaped DIRT Demon. The win for the Pillsbury DIRT Modified team was worth $1,700.

Jason Barney came charging from his fourth starting position to lead the opening lap of the NGK Spark Plugs DIRT Modified feature. Ryan Baye took the top spot away from Barney on lap two. Action was halted on lap three when the Mike Hulsizer car flipped in the third turn area. Hulsizer was uninjured in the show stopping accident. When the race resumed the young duo of Baye and Barney continued to lead the field.

Johnson moved from third to first on lap seven to take over the lead. Johnson made a classic move in splitting the cars of Baye and Barney in one sweep. The remainder of the race was caution free, but by no means did Johnson run away with the win. Drivers like Decker, Steve Hulsizer, Frankie Caprara, Bob McCreadie, Pat Ward, Jimmy Phelps and Scott Prentice were all looking to run down Johnson.

Decker was the first to clear traffic and was able to soon close in on Johnson. During the final 10 laps the two DIRT stars worked in and out of lapped traffic in battling for the feature win. The race was in doubt until the final turn of the final lap, with Johnson winning and Decker settling for second. Bob McCreadie came back after his early race pit stop and worked up to a strong third place finish. Steve Hulsizer drove his 358 Modified to a fourth place outing with Ward completing the top five feature finishers.

Mike Chilson won his second IMCA Modified feature of the season last Friday night. Chilson won out over Brian House, Bob Bradt, Johnny Hill and Larry Bezner. The first lap of the feature was led by Bezner. Chilson took over on lap two and led the rest of the 20 lap distance.

Brian Evenden won his third Four Cylinder Stock feature of the season last Friday night. Harvey Calkins Jr., Joe Briere, Roger West Sr. and Roger Olschewske completed the top five feature finishers behind Evenden. Walt Van Epps led the first eight laps of the feature before Evenden took over on lap nine of the 15 circuit event.

Tony Buffa won his sixth straight Dwarf Car feature of the season last Friday night. Scott Nash, Barry Virts, Ken Gamlen and Darren Forbes followed Buffa on this occasion. Steve Miller led the opening six laps of the feature. Nash led the next two, before Buffa took over for good on lap nine of the 20 lap feature.
