ALAN JOHNSON LEADS FINAL HALF TO WIN SUPER DIRT EVENT AT BROCKVILLE
BROCKVILLE-Alan Johnson didn’t look too pleased when he drew the 13th starting position for the Hot Country Q-102.9 100 at Brockville Ontario Speedway. However, when he strapped into new Bicknell chassis he was more than up to the challenge. The Phelps NY pilot led the final 51 laps in scoring the win on Friday night in the second Sunoco Super DIRT Series event of the year at the BOS.
Matt Sheppard set fast time of the night clocking in a shade above 14.3 seconds around the fast quarter mile oval. However, it was Frank Caprara and Danny Johnson sitting on the front row when the green flag dropped. Johnson looked dominant early in the race as he tried for a sweep of the two Brockville tour races. However, his night ended with a broken rear end on lap 21. Pete Bicknell assumed the top spot and would lead until the second caution of the night on lap 49. Alan Johnson who had quickly moved through the field from that 13th starting spot quickly pulled alongside the Canadian and grabbed the lead on lap 50. Johnson would lead the rest of the way with Bicknell getting close in the late going but not close enough for a serious challenge. Steve Paine finished third followed by Pat Ward and Brett Hearn in a race with some minor cautions but also some prolonged green flag racing.
Pierre Dagenais, Sheppard, Todd Burley, Jason Barney and Caprara rounded out the top 10. The top Brockville regular was Mark Hitchcock who finished 11th while BOS Sportsman champ Randy Gaudet completed all 100 laps and was credited with a solid 14th.
Adam Moore scored his elusive first ever Sportsman feature win at the BOS going wire to wire in the 15 lap affair. Pernie Banks was second with Kyle Dingwall, Dave Wilgosh and Kyle Wilson rounding out the fast five.
Randy Earl opened up leads of almost half a lap in taking yet another feature win in the Pro Stock event. Dave Marshall was second in his first appearance of 2001 in front of Sheldon Hoogwerf, Jody Beckstead and Steve Johnston.
John Mulder recovered from mechanical problems in his heat race to roar through the field to score the win in the 15 lap Novice event. Mark Rinaldi was second followed by Charles Barkley, Jeff Sallans and Earl Simmons.
Kees Van Winden scored the victory in the 10 lap Rookie event. Richard Brunelle was second with Chris Tremblay, Don Hall and Jamie Eglinton third through fifth respectively.
The final event of the 2001 racing season at Brockville Ontario Speedway goes Sunday afternoon, September 16 with the Kanes Towing 200 lap Enduro. The green flag drops at 2pm.
