MIKE PERROTTE TAKES 358 MODIFIED MAIN EVENT AT FROGTOWN
Hogansburg, NY - Mike Perrotte of Morrisonville, NY finally found his way to victory lane at Frogtown International Speedway after a long drought at the north country speed plant this past Saturday night. It was Mike's second win of the 2001 season and helped put a cushion between himself and his competitors in the point chase.
Matt Gonyo and Tom Jock, Jr. started on the front row of the event with Tom Jock, Jr. grabbing the lead at the drop of the green but it was short lived as Craig Ormsby grabbed the lead when they crossed the start/finish line for the first time. Ormsby was tough in the early going of the River Valley Antique Tractor Club/Smith Lumber main event but Todd Stewart of Kingston, Ontario had worked his way to second with Bill Cook, Mike Perrotte and Kevin Fetterly following close behind. Stewart continued to put the pressure on Ormsby until lap 13 when Craig got wide coming out of turn 4 and both Stewart and Perrotte were able to get by. This set up a great side by side dual between Stewart and Perrotte that had the fans standing and cheering.
Perrotte finally got by Stewart on lap 16 and stayed there the rest of the way. Todd Stewart finished second, with Brian McDonald putting on quite a driving exhibition in the late stages of the race to finish third, Leon Gonyo got up for fourth with the always consistent Bill Cook finishing fifth.
In the Pro Stock 20 lap feature, Billy "the Kid" King came home the winner but not after a great side by side battle with fellow competitor Louie Jackson. Scott Kocher and Tim Allen started on the front row of the 20 lap feature with Kocher grabbing the early lead. Kocher lead up until lap #5 when Louie Jackson was able to get by and take the lead. Jackson looked steady throughout the race and looked like he might hold off King who had worked his way past Kocher and kept trying the outside of Jackson only to loose ground each time he tried.
Finally, King took one last try and it paid off as he got the lead on lap #19 and went on for the win. Louie Jackson held on for second with Scott Kocher, Bryan Loeb and Casey Swamp rounding out the top five.
In the Semi Pro feature, Greg Snyder of Fort Covington, NY continued his winning ways by fending off a tough Pete Backus for the win. Paul Czyz grabbed the early lead followed by Jamie Martin and Pete Backus. Synder who started 7th in the field moved up quickly and grabbed the lead on lap #3. Jamie Martin ran close for second only to have Jeff Marshall pass him for second on lap #7. Backus who had been steady throughout the race was able to get by Marshall for second on lap #14 and set his sights on Snyder. But Snyder was just to quick and went on for the win. Pete Backus took second with Jeff Marshall, Kevin Mayville and Steve Brand rounding out the top five.
In the popular Bandit division, a field of 26 put on the best show of the night with Kurtis McPhee taking the win but not before he had to fight off a determined Bruno Richard for the win. Kevin Mere who has been in the thick of things all season, grabbed the early lead and lead for the first two laps only to loose the lead to Bruno Richard who worked his way from his 16th starting position up to first in just 3 laps! Back in the pack, McPhee began to make his charge and finally after some great side by side racing, Kurtis was able to grab the lead on lap #6 and go on for the victory. Bruno Richard finished second, with Kevin Fetterly, Jr. (Mr. Consistent) getting up for third with Ron Tyo and Kevin Mere rounding out the top five.
In the exciting and always action packed Enduro feature, Ricky Thompson worked his way through traffic and was able to elude Ryan Phillips in the late stages of the race to take the win. Ryan Phillips finished second with Owen White, Nathan Thrana and Robbie Cook rounding out the top five.
We would like to thank the River Valley Antique Tractor Club and Smith Lumber for such a great evening of racing. Hope to see them back again next season.
Next week it will be St. Lawrence Centre and Burning Sky Office Products night at the speedway with a regular card of racing. It will also be poster/banner night at the speedway with the kids making posters and banners of their favorite drivers and cars with the fans being the judges at intermission.
