CHARLIE DONK WINS 76 LAP MOD MAIN AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE,N.Y....."Hurricane" season is over at Black Rock, at least for this week. Charlie Donk out of Macedon, N.Y. picked up his first win of the season, and it happened to be the biggest race of the season so far, and it was also a Syracuse qualifier. Dale Welty continued his domination of the PPG Super- Stocks, and Fred Buckley picked up his first win of the season in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Skip Dean picked up his first win in the first feature, and Jack Ayres was the winner in the second. Willy Grant Jr. picked up the victory in the Black Rock Bandits.

Charlie Donk finally made a visit to victory lane in the 358 Modified division at Black Rock Speedway. It happened on Pepsi Cola of Elmira/Steuben Educators night. It was also a big 76 lap Syracuse qualifier. Pole setter Derrick Podsiadlo jumped out to the early lead, and was being chased by Ray Dann. But on the move early was Tim Sebring, Charlie Donk, and Steve Paine. By lap 14 Sebring was in second behind leader Ray Dann. On the following circuit Sebring took the lead, and Donk was up to second 4 laps later, Paine was in fifth at this time. Sebring and Donk then hooked up in a torrid battle for the lead with Paine now third. At the half way mark, Donk was still the leader with Sebring second , Paine third, and Bryon Turner fourth. On lap 51 there was a pile up in turn four that involved Eric VanSkiver, Derrick Podsiasadlo, Brian Polmanteer, Mike and Stacy Jackson. On the re-start, Donk pulled away from the field, as Sebring and Paine raced for second and third. On lap 58 Paine had a right rear tire go flat, the yellow came out at this time for a Chuck Kennison spin. Paine was able to change the tire and rejoin the field with out losing a lap. As the race resumed it was a battle up front between Donk and Sebring, but by lap 70 it looked like Sebring's tires went away, and Donk sprinted away from the field to take the popular win. Sebring held on for second, Bryon Turner was third, Paine got back up to finish fourth, and Bill Deming filled up the top five. Sebring, Turner, and Paine were heat winners. Walt Mitchell was the winner in the Modified B-Main.

Dale Welty just keeps on winning in the PPG Super-Stock division. He has only failed to win in one event all season. On this night he took the lead on lap 6, and the rest they say, is history. Although Dave Fultz gave Welty all he wanted in the second spot, there was no catching the pink and black 1-2-3. At the checkers it was Welty in for the win, Dave Fultz held on for second, third was Quinn Sutherland, fourth was Kevin Chilson, and Dave Machuga was fifth. Heat wins went to Welty, Fultz, and Sparky Hills.

In the Regional Pro-Truck division, there was a brand new winner, a good race, and a paint swapping photo finish. Jeff Barner was the early leader in this 20 lap event. He was followed closely by Don Putman, Fred Buckley and Eddie Machuga. Buckley took over the lead on lap 4. Fred Matthews was now in the runner-up slot, and he had Tommy Austin on his tailgate. A few laps later Mathews dropped off the pace, and backed up in the field. This set up the shoot out between Buckley and Austin. These two drivers raced fender to fender for the remainder of the event, and were trading paint and just about dead even at the line as the checkers were flying. But at the line it was Buckley over Austin by just inches! Jeff Barner was third, fourth went to Steve Brace, and Shawn Brace was fifth. Heats were won by Jeff Barner, and Ron Divens.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Skip Dean out of Dundee,N.Y., picked up his first win in an exciting bumper width win over Phil Yaw, Don Potter was third, Jake Clancey was fourth, and Scott Bradley filled out the top five. In the second 4 Cyl. Stock feature, Jack Ayers and Alan Crooker locked horns in a race long duel that saw Ayres victorious for the second time in two weeks. Crooker was second, third was Eddie Mills, Greg Crooker got fourth, and Matt Balmer was fifth. Heats were won by, Skip Dean, Phil Yaw, and Eddie Mills.

Willy Grant Jr., was once again victorious in the Black Rock Bandit division, following him across the line were, Joey Kurtz, Josh Mills, Steven Ovens, and Serenity Sutherland.
