COFFEY, CHRYSLER, STEFANSKI, AND NICHOLS CAPTURE FEATURE WINS AT RANSOMVILLE

RANSOMVILLE, NY…Friday, July 13, 2001…Vic Coffey of Leicester, NY captured his first win of the season in the Mighty Taco Modifieds aboard his Sweeteners Plus #32c entry. Coffey took the lead away from Don Spatarico on lap 20 and held off a late race challenge from Danny Johnson for the win.

Don Spatarico took the lead at the onset of the feature go and quickly jumped out to a comfortable lead. Coffey, Johnson, and Bicknell broke into the top five before lap four. A four car battle between these three and Mark Sylvies was taking place for second while Spatarico continued to distance himself from the field. Around the lap fifteen mark, Coffey began to close the gap. By lap 20, Coffey was all over the back end of Spatarico. A circuit later, Coffey took the lead away from Spatarico just before Spatarico retired to the infield with a right rear flat.

The event looked to be over as it had gone caution free for the first twenty-seven laps. However, a slowing Russ Zimmerman slowed in turn two brought out the caution which put Johnson on the rear bumper of Coffey for the three lap shoot-out. Coffey set the pace with Johnson in tow. As the field came down for the restart, the crowd came to their feet anticipating a classic Coffey/Johnson battle as we witnessed on a couple of occasions last season. However, Coffey maintained the position and actually pulled away, taking the checkered by three car lengths over Johnson, Bicknell, Robby Krull, and Ricky Richner. Heat winners were Coffey and Spatarico.

The Queenston-Lewiston Duty Free Sportsman laurels went to Randy Chrysler who also picked up his first win of the season at Ransomville. Piloting his brand new Bicknell chassis sponsored by Randys Smoke Shop, Chrysler took the lead after a three car battle with James Strassburg and rookie Dave Schulz on lap 14.

Strassburg led the early stages and looked to be the car to beat before a caution slowed the pace and bunched up the field. The restart found Chrysler moving into the top three which set up the race of the night. Chrysler passed two cars in one corner to take the lead and eventually the win. Chad Brachmann passed three cars in the final two laps to finish second. Scott George, Don Martin, and Dave Schulz rounded out the top five.

Taking the NAPA Prostock feature win was Joe Stefanski. Stefanski of North Tonawanda, NY took the lead away from Steve Miller who had led the way until that point. Miller took the lead at the drop of the green and held off several challenges from Stefanski before slipping high in turn two. Once in the lead, Stefanski never looked back as he collected his third win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Steve Miller, Jason Boyle, Pat McCoy, and Pete Stefanski.

The Tarnowski Racing Engines Streetstock mid-season championship 20 lap event was won by Dave Nichols. Digger Lester and John Dietz led the way at the get go before contact sent them both scrambling. Getting by on the lowside was Nichols who not only took the lead but held it for the remainder of the caution filled event. The division sponsored by Fish's Automotive found Bobby Clare, Cory Sawyer, Fred Srock, and Jerry Condren round out the top five.
