MILTON CONTINUES THE STREAK OF NEW WINNERS ON EMPIRE SERIES; BOSS IN TOWN!!
WEEDSPORT, NY...Todd Milton, from nearby Jordan, NY, became the seventh different driver to win an Empire Series race during the 2004 campaign. Milton, had been close on two earlier occasions on taking the lead, but luck just did not fall his way. He joins Tim Fuller, Pat Ward, Matt Sheppard, Jimmy Phelps, Gary Tomkins and Bob McCreadie as Empire Series winners in 2004.
Bob Henry Jr. cruised to an easy win in the DIRT Sportsman division. In other action it was Kevin Pangrazio winning the special 25-lap BOSS Street Stock events. Jeff Flemming took top honors in the 4-cylinder Enduro division.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Tom Sears Jr. fall to Shawn Beardsley on the second lap. Beardsley blasted into the lead and began to build a lead. Todd Milton broke free from the pack in second and began to track down the high flying Beardsley. On lap eight Milton pulled even with Beardsley and then complete the pass exiting the fourth turn.
As the field exited the fourth turn on lap nine, Danny Johnson found himself "walled" into the cement outside retaining wall. Bob McCreadie also pulled into the pits at this time and dropped from the event.
Milton remained the leader on the restart stretching out a 3.4 second lead over Beardsley, Sheppard, Alan Johnson and tom Sears Jr..
Matt Sheppard moved into second on lap 17 and began to shorten Milton's lead. Trying to catch Milton became much more easy when Tim McCreadie pulled up to a stop on the front stretch to bring out the yellow and bunch up the field.
Try as he might Sheppard fell short on is every move. The top five finishers remained as follows: Sheppard, Alan Johnson, Decker and Fuller.
The 20-lap Sportsman main saw John Juhl take the lead and stretch out a lead over Ryan Richardson and Mike Conrow. Juhl also saw his lead evaporate when Jason Potter slowed in between turns three and four. The restart saw Bob Henry Jr. take control of the race. The yellow flew on lap 17 when Russ Hefti looped his mount in the second turn.
This set up a dash to the checkers with Henry Jr. taking the win followed by Greg Doust, Ryan Richardson, Mike Bowman and Mike Conrow. A total of three yellows slowed the race pace to just 70.969 mph.
The BOSS Street Stockers need to start thinking before they put the pedal to the metal. The opening lap of the 25-lap BOSS Street Stock finale saw a multi-car accident occur in the first turn. With the track blocked officials decided to red flag the race.
The restart saw Kevin Pangrazio pass Bobby Boynton for the lead. The yellow flew again on lap four when local runner Bill Flask looped his car in the first turn.
It looked as if Pangrazio might hand the lead back to Adam Depuy, when on lap seven he drifted extremely high in the first turn and slightly tagged the outside concrete wall.
Lap nine saw the yellow out again. Tick Lippard spun his car in the second turn. Flask looped again at the halfway mark in the race. Pangraio still was leading Depuy, Dave Mannise and Blane Smith. It was Smith who seemed on the move towards the front.
Dave Emmons was the next to bring out yellow. he slammed into the first turn wall on lap 17. On e lap later the yellow was out again Depuy pulled to a stop on the front straight with a flat tire.
The closing laps of the feature saw Smith challenge Pangrazio for the lead. Smith would have to settle for second behind Pangrazio. In post race inspection Smith was found not to a have a brake on each wheel, disqualifying him from the podium.
Pangrazio earned the win followed by Dave Manise, J.J. Mazur and Mark Loveland.
This Sunday brings an end to the 2004 Colton RV Empire Series. Tim Fuller remained the points leader of the Empire Series by a mere 20 markers over Gary Tomkins.
Race time for Sunday begins at 7 p.m. sharp. For more information about Cayuga County contact www.cayugacountyfairspeedway.com using the internet.
